Default Emailed BFG about Rivals - Response

I just bought a C6 Z and I am trying to figure out which tires to get. Hoping the 335/30/18 Rivals might be an option, I emailed BFG to see when TR would get more inventory. Not good news... Email and response pasted below.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I am looking for 335/30/18 Rivals. I see them on your site but not on Tire Rack. When will this size be available again? Any chance of a 335 or 345/30/19 coming out?

Thanks,

Steve

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Steve, we apologize the BFG g-Force Rival tires in size 335/3ZR18 (BFG part # 13720) are not available for The Tire Rack to order. Unfortunately, we do not have a production restart date at this time. It is still an active part number and has not been discontinued at BFG. Please check back with us in 2 months and we will provide you with an update.

Also, we do not have any plans at this time to make the g-Force Rival in size 345/30ZR19 or 335/30ZR19.

We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing BFGoodrich.

If we can assist you further, please respond to this email or call us at 1-877-788-8899 (toll free) between 8:00AM and 8:00PM Eastern Time Monday through Friday or between 8:30AM and 4:30PM Eastern Time on Saturday.

Sincerely,

rumor mill mentioned they are revising their new Rival compound.
I guess once that's finalized they will get the ball rolling again.

Yep, the Rival S is supposed to be out in the next couple months...

I know someone who works for Michelin and the scoop I got on the Rival is that they are revising the compound, but it will only be available in 10 different SKUs (part numbers) when they are released. I was not told when they would be released or what sizes they are going to be.

It isn't much information, I know, but I deem it to be extremely reliable nonetheless.

No, that's good stuff. It would seem to support one of the other things that I'd heard: that the Rival and Rival S would co-exist together. i.e. the Rival S isn't intended to be a replacement for the Rival but rather an addition to the product line similar to what Bridgestone did with the RE-11 and RE-11A. I'd love to know what sizes BFG is planning for the S...

You are correct. They will coexist like the RE-11 and RE-11A. My source told me as such, anyway.

I always like to jab at the Michelin and Bridgestone reps that visit our shop (I work at a tire dealer affiliated with both brands) that neither one makes a good street/track tire to fit my C4, in either 275/40/17 or 315/35/17. To which they always say "Yeah... and we're not going to." Come to think of it they don't make anything good for my 1993 Miata either...

That'll be seriously bad news for us (Corvette). I'd put money on none of the big sizes being in that list.

Meh. I'll wait to see what the actual tread width specs are on the 315/30 18 before I get excited.

Christian, who's seen 275's wider than 295's and 305's narrower than 285's.

The old Rival 315 looks fine on a 10.5. The bigger one might soften the sidewall a little anyway like Sam was suggesting in one of these threads.

Yeah, the sidewall thing was something I was texting with my co-driver on. It may turn out that the extra give back there is exactly what works.

First thing first though! Gotta get out on the Z2 SS's and seeing how they work.

There was an idea for the Rival like this:

C5 fitment

They already make a 315/30-18 rear
They should make a 285/30-18 front

C6 and C7 fitment

They already make a 275/35-18 front
They should make a 315/30-19 rear

The reason that they C7 owners want the 315/30-19 is that it goes on an 11" wide wheel and it's the widest fitment that is an easy fitment.

But the Rival is being closed out. People who are e-mailing are not getting any explanation. This is a disaster
.

The only stuff being "closed out" is 2013 tire stock. Look at the "specs" section on TR and you'll see them differentiate between the 2013 and newer, 2014 tires. I suspect that the standard Rival inventory will start to fill back up in the coming months (just like all the other 200TW stuff).

Yeah, check back in two months to see if your tire size is going back into production.

Is the OP looking for 200 treadwear tires ?

RE-11A

Front, 275/30-19, 9.5" wide wheel (10" wide wheel)
Front, 305/30-19, 11" wide wheel
Rear, 325/30-19, 11.5" wide wheel (12" wide wheel)

The Pilot Sport Cup 2 in 335/25-20 is a run-flat and is 180 treadwear. However, it weighs less than the RE-11A
.

My friend has a set of 335/30/19 Rivals on his car I asked him where he got them and apparently they made a very small batch. Bummer.

FWIW, I've had a pair of Rivals in 315/30/18 size (for a different vehicle) on order at Tire Rack since December. Just got an email from TR the other day and they are estimating March 30 availability.

FWIW, that sounds like it may be the Rival-S delivery date. Not sure if you'd prefer the Rival over the Rival-S but it's something to check into if you have a preference.

Yes, that is for the Rival S.

EDIT: just spoke with the Tire Rack rep and he told me that the Rival will "eventually go discontinued and will be replaced with Rival S". He also indicated that the Rival S and Rival could be used together since they are the same tread compounding. Seems odd if that were the case, but that's what he said...

Yep, it's my understanding that BFG will be making both the Rival and Rival-S on a go-forward. Think of it as being like the RE-11 and RE-11A; slightly different but still related tires. IIRC, the rationale was that the regular Rival has a lot of fans (LeChump, One Lap, Optima Street Car Challenge, etc) while the Rival-S is aimed squarely at the autoX community looking for something that is better suited to their application and the Solo Nats surface.
