Would you also put the pads and a caliper in there, have someone step on the brake and measure again to see if the caliper is spreading when you put pressure on them?

My opinion - its getting there. the 1/64" side is probably ready for replacement.

Good luck finding rebuilts that aren't already spread

I don't think that's how you measure (dynamic vs static). It's the static/retained measurement that matters. Correct me if I'm wrong.

New ones are $120. It's a wear item.

Yep & C6 calipers fit and are sturdier
when mine spread it was similar to spreading a fork.
the bottom (Toward the hub) the hub was wider than the top (away from the hub) the the pads would wear quickly at the bridge area leaving more pad near the hub and bare backer plate near the bridge

I'm sorry, I can't correct you. I'm trying to learn, that's why I asked.

Yeah, but you can't get them in red!!!

I should have mentioned that, I use C6 calipers as well. Brand new, pull from the box, through away the dust boots and go.

I actually heard that the Caddy XLR calipers were better, still, and a direct fit (same pad, etc) but I haven't tried.

The C6 calipers are definitely a nice upgrade, only about $93 each shipped on Amazon

I think I should measure them that way also, thanks!

Are they also sliding calipers?

I could not find them on Amazon, could you help me find them?

Maybe that's all I need instead of bbk.

Try AC Delco numbers 172-2296 and 172-2297 on Amazon. The price seems to change, it was $94 when I ordered but they're $103 and $106 now, which still isn't bad.

Found it thanks,

This looks then, to be a slight improvement (for strength of the caliper) with an "improved" design & maybe a bit more material over the c5z originals.

Maybe all I need (for now).

Just to be sure:

1) bolts direct onto c5z bracket - no spacers needed
2) uses 12.8" stock rotors
3) compatible with original master cylinder - no long pedal
4) takes original pad shape/size/thickness
5) uses original c5z brake lines (banjo)
6) anything else?

So it would seem GM put this out specifically to address the "spread" problem.

Yes/no?

Yes on all the above, it's a direct bolt-on replacement for the C5 units.

It does seem that they did a good assessment of the C5 brake shortcomings, as the base model C6 rotors have a better hat profile as well to reduce cracking of the ring. These are a bolt-on replacement for the C5 rotors as well.
