Default Garage Lighting

Here's my most recent column from Vintage Motorsport magazine. It deals with garage lighting.

It's time to start making the switch to LED lights. The best part is that you can tell your wife you're going to be saving money by cutting back on the electric bill.

Let us know how that goes for you.

FWIW when we moved down here a few months ago I just put up 8x cheapo single bulb light fixtures in addition to the single one that was in the middle of the garage for a total of 9 single bulbs in a grid.

The fixtures were like $2 each at lowes and I filled them with 1250 lumen 5000K LED bulbs that use 13 watts and are about $10 each on amazon.

11250 lumens and 117 watts total of nice white light for about $120 total was perfect for our little 20x20 garage. I still need to choose a few more lights for over the bench and worklights under the car but am really happy with the way the ceiling lights came out.

Just after I added outlets and a handful of fluorescent lights to my garage, my Dad picked up some LEDs lights at Costco, they light up his basement very well, and now I have half a dozen of them sitting in my garage to replace everything I had just put up a short time ago. The price on them is currently under $30 ea I think.

Love LED but in most cases the ROI isn't there...at least quite yet. I have 6 1800 lumen CFL bulbs in my garage that are wired via extension cords and it works really well for now. Less than $100 for all in.

Default Garage Lighting

I just added 3 of the COSTCO LED lights to my garage and it completely changed my ability to see. Before I struggled to find anything with the single florescent, now it is like daylight.

I just put 4 of the Costco LEDs in my dad's single garage. Two plugged into the opener (got rid of the bulbs and screwed in two bulb to plug converters) and two on a switch. He can see fine now, they provide plenty of light.

I picked up two to convert my opener lights also to supplement my 6 T8s in my two car garage.

Costco just started selling Feit LED bulbs.

Richard,

Thanks for the article; love reading your blog! I need to put more lighting in my shop (shocker; like the stereotypical woman needing more clothes), and this has got me to thinking.

Have a good one,
Mike
