Default C5 Hood Vent w/ C7 Grille

I was experiencing high oil temperatures last fall with my C5. Over the winter I set out to address the issue with adding oil cooler lines to the RD radiator with built in oil cooler. I also opened up the area behind the license plate cover to get more air in. To get the air out I wanted to do something a little different so I got a C7 hood vent grille piece and started cutting. With the help of a friend's body shop we got the grille in and smoothed out. After going for a quick drive to check for leaks I could feel the heat coming out of the vent. Hopefully my overheating problems are a thing of the past!

That looks like what GM should have done from the factory, nice job!

I've got my aftermarket hood that I've modified at the body shop getting painted right now....hopefully it is a heat extracting beast.

Man that looks great. How is it mounted?. Was a lot of body work needed to be done around it? Been looking at the Track Spec unit but that looks very good.

Nice! I had wondered if it could be riveted in like the trackspec vents or had to be molded in, looks great.

Very nice indeed, looks like it may have came that way from the factory.

I wanted to be able to remove it, not quite sure why though. So there are bolts glued to the backside of the hood that the vent secures to. There are spacers to get it to site flush with the top side of the hood. Originally I did not care about the exact fitment or that it was flush all around but since I have a friend who owns a body shop he got it to fit flush all around. I cut the opening smaller and kept enlarging it a little at a time to get it even all around. I could make a template now of the opening and it would be a lot easier doing a second one. The hood had to be built up in the middle of the front and back of the vent since the C5 hood is concave in those areas and the vent is flat.

I may be back at my car this coming weekend that I can take more pictures of the mounting and gaps.

What ever it cost in time and money had to be way less than what I spent on my Blackdog racing hood, and they both look essentially the same. Nice job!

That black dog hood is exactly what I wanted but I couldn't justify the price in my budget. I'm really jealous of it!

The C7 vent piece cost about $100. Then it was just time and paint after that.

Really is a great idea and well executed! Where did you source the C7 vent?

The vent I got from Gene at Cultrag. He was very helpful in being sure I got the correct piece.

Yeah, I couldn't afford it either. Don't tell my wife how much it costs.
