Gorilla Auto Aluminum Racing Lug Nuts are designed to reduce the weight of your vehicle without sacrificing strength. Made from cold forged aluminum, which is 1/3 the weight of steel, they provide a firm and secure hold to last for years to come. Easy to install and remove, they’re also available in a wide range of finish options to complement your car. For something more colorful, choose Red or Blue. For a more classic look, choose Black, Silver, or Titanium finishes.

Not sure the words aluminum and lug nuts belong in the same sentence?

Huh. I'll stick with steel for my race car.

I've used aluminum lugs on my car for autocross with no problem, just make sure you buy 2 sets if you change or remove tires often, especially with non-oem hardened studs, because you will definitely strip/wear out the threads. Naturally, the aluminum can only take so much abuse. I check all my lugs before each event. BTW, I'm in Street Tire classes. Not sure how they would handle R-comps.

I've never weighed steel versus aluminum lugs, but there is definitely a weight savings. Us autocross junkies are always looking to shed unsprung weight.

However, for track (HPDE only for me), I'd stick with steel. I've seen videos where all the drivers lugs stripped and he lost a wheel. Not cool...

I love the weight saving of aluminum over steel, but for track use on lugs, no way for me.

I would imagine any stripped threads were a result of cross-threading the aluminum lug nuts onto a steel stud.

I asked Gorilla about maximum torque and here is their reply:

Note that this drop closes tonight at midnight PDT!

I cross threaded a few... I'll admit my bone head mistakes. It's a bit easier to do then steel. Also, don't use an impact on aluminum lugs.

However, I also had a few that just could not handle the constant on/off of changing wheels/tires frequently. I'd go to torque down the lugs (~80 ft lbs) and they would just strip out from there.

It's not a problem if you have spare lugs (hence why I said buy extra's) and it's definitely quicker to replace than a stud...

I'm just advising people that change wheels often that the aluminum will not hold up like steel lugs.

If you want to shed a few pounds, get a cool look, and aren't tracking the car, I say go for it. A decent set is ~$100, so it's a good deal right now.

Thanks for sharing your experience jesup, all good info. How frequently were you swapping wheels around? Just curious.

At least 4 times per month. Drive to autocross -> swap to autocross setup -> swap back to DD setup. I autocross'd about 2-4 times per month. Always torque'd ~75 ft lbs... at least that's what my torque wrench said.

Sounds like your breaker bar/torque wrench and lug nuts were definitely getting a work out!

Are you serious? Porsche has used aluminum lug nuts for over 30 years and we've never heard about any problems.

Agreed. I have used open ended aluminum lugs on ARP extended bolts and never had an issue. I ordered an extra set because they do not take the abuse of an impact wrench which scuffs the outside paint (black in my case). Also, if I am not mistaken the single center wheel lug on several race cars are aluminum.
