Looks like he went down the escape road for the original hairpin.
Back when the hairpin was still part of the course
there were various barriers (staggered tire walls, etc) on the escape road to keep the cars on premises

Drifting
Saw this last night. Crazy. As many times as I've been there I never realized it went that far off to the left.
Couple of things. The first thing I would have done was try engine braking and second it didn't sound like he was trying to pump the brakes or anything but I could be wrong.
