Jack Beckman’s funny car blew up today at New England Dragway during today’s NHRA qualifying, and yet the most fascinating part of the incident (other than, you know, a healthy Beckman walking away from it) is how calmly he reacts to it in the moments after his car blew up in his face:

Hear's something to think about; How many RPMs dose a Top Fuel motor turn from the Green Light to the finish (if it stays together)? The answer will surprise you.

Pretty static, around 7,000 once the clutch starts coming in. How about the torque? Eight thousand ft-lb with transients to 12,000!!! (Don Schumacher Racing has just patented a way to measure the torque).
Have a good one,
Mike

NHRA Officials have just announced racing has been postponed to Monday. Racing will start at 11am starting w/ TF. Gates will open at 10:30 am. General Admission tickets will be available at the gate for $54. If you have a ticket to today's event and cannot attend the rescheduled event, the ticket holder must retain the ticket(s) for use toward ticket purchase for next year's event.

As you can see it's a lot less then many would think. I asked this question in a Engineering class and some students Guesses form 12000 to 20000 or More... Hey it's (lets say) 8000 rpm for 3.8 sec. = 506
