Default Cool-A-Clava

Has anyone been able to beta test one yet? I saw a prototype at the PRI show last year, it looked/felt really cool! Yes, pun intended...just curious how well it will fit in the helmet....$99

Seems like a lot, considering you need all the cool shirt stuff in addition.

Does it shampoo & blow dry?

I should have mine Thursday. I'm racing Saturday and Sunday so I'll report back then.

Very tempting, waiting to hear reviews as well. Says 4lbs... that's a lot of weight in your helmet in the event of an incident. Should say "only wear with HANS device".

I already have all the cool shirt and helmet blower goodies...so no extra sweat there other than plugging in. And I have the quick release/force disconnect devices there if I need to exit in an emergency.

If you're racing you already have a HANS type device.

Looking forward to your feedback, thank you!!!

If it fits in my helmet I can see it really helping. I'm a hot and sweaty mess as it is LOL!!!

It can't be 4lbs - maybe they mean the shipping weight.

Just got mine..... Weighs about 8oz. Since even with a cool suit I've gotten heat exhaustion, I'm VERY interested to see how this works. It does seem a bit on the "flimsy" side but if it works and lasts a season I'd be happy.

Gonna be 91 at Palmer this weekend Doug - hope mine comes today! He had to switch out the fittings for my FAST cooler.

I had to do the same. Get some Velcro to hold it into your helmet. You really just need to hold it into place until your head is in there- then it really has no place to go.

I don't have any accurate lightweight scales, but the shipping scale at my shop said .2 lbs. Definitely looks like a chinsy piece of kit. We'll see how it works.

Is that 8 oz dry or 8 oz filled with cooling liquid?

Just an update - used it all day in 95 degree heat. It's amazing. Worth it's weight in gold. I guess the only slight downside is that my head was freezing from time to time and I was actually tempted to turn it off during the race. But honestly at the end of the race waiting in impound I usually take my helmet off as fast as possible and guzzle some water. This time I just sat there cold and refreshed and didn't even bother taking my helmet off. Go out and buy one now.

I second Mark's review. Same race....same track....same insane heat. Couldn't believe how big a difference this thing makes. I would probably add that it's better to route the lines so the shirt fills first and then routes to you head so a little heat soak from the body keeps you from having brain freeze. I love this thing.

Is there a way to regulate it? Temp wise/circ wise?

Does it take away from the max cooling of the shirt? I just got mine in mail. I'm thinking of wiring a separate pump for just the piece. Would you guys rather have a separate system or do you guys think the head cooler in series with the shirt is the way to go? I have only fit mine not raced it in the heat yet.

Thank you guys for the reviews! Any issues with your helmet being tighter? Also, did you put this under the padding or just on top of the padding with double-sided tape? Got a pic of your helmet with it in there?

I tried Velcro with two face tape. Didn't work. I left it I there just to have something sticky to help keep it in place but you really need to lay it in the helmet and the compression of your head being in there holds it in place. It's probably about an 1/8" thick so little problem with making it tighter.

No reduction in cooling capacity I noticed. I found that if you figure out which line off your cooler is the input, you should route that to the shirt first then to the Cool-a- Clava this was you take a little chill off the water before it comes to the head. If you go to the head first it's insanely cold (especially on the grid).
