Default C6Z vs 2017 Camaro ZL1?

What do you guys think? I have been looking for a while for a late model C6Z but just read the C&D test of the Camaro.

I never considered them to be in the same "catagory" a true sports car vs. a pony car, but damn, this is a lot of Camaro.

If you have read the review of the 2017 what say you?

It may be limited production & dealers may lump on a premium, I get that. Still?

I know, it's heck of a car. And I'm not a Camaro guy, either. Many on FI section drool over the ability to stick coolers/radiators (turbo, IC, etc.) in the front, too! Lots of room...

It's a winner, no doubt.

Good luck whatever you do!

PS Thanks for all of your videos!

also look at the 1Le. (or does the ZL1 package include the 1LE?)

the new 1LE is faster than the old Z28 by alot.

i was in the same boat as you (i came from 3 camaros, and was considering the 6th gen and C6Z) but in the end it came down to one simple thing... weight.
'17 ZL1 = 3,900 to 4,100 lbs depending on options
C6Z = just under 3,200

The 2017 1LE is a lot faster than 2015 SS 1LE but not 2015 Z28 with LS7.

The 2017 ZL1 lapped the ring in 7:29.xx whereas the 2015 Z28 recorded a ring lap of 7:37.xx with the back one third of track being damp.

The 2017 ZL1 looks like a hell of a car and love the way the 10 speed auto keeps the rpms in the sweet spot 100% of the time. It sounds amazing too. About a month ago a local dealership sold a 2015 Z28 for $56K still unregistered with 81 miles on odometer. I considered purchasing it forgetting that I was there looking for a new truck...

Yes I agree on the weight, but 2017 technology vs 2012/13 (what I am looking for) could tip the scale?

If you are looking for a track car, the C6Z06 is far ahead of the newer Camaro. Power to weight ratio is far superior. The Vette is wider and lower. I just instructed in a brand new ZL1 and it was no comparison with my 2010 Z06. Turn in. Braking. Power down on corner exit. Transition response. The Vette is the sports car vs the pony car.

PS: I owned and ran a 1993 ZR28 once upon a time so I have a tender spot and lots of respect for Camaros. But they are not a Corvette.

The Camaro still has the cheaper unibody construction. I would take the Z. It will feel much more planted.

This was the new 650hp ZL1? I'm surprised by that with all the new tech and power.

im sure hes refering to the 5th gen version, not the upcoming 650 6th gen.

and the power to weight is closer than you think

C6 Z06= .1590
6th gen ZL1 = .1625

with power to weight that close, the 800 lbs lighter c6Z would easily dominate the camaro in just about every performance test.

Performance or comfort?

My 06 C6Z is around 3000lbs and 600 whp. remember you will have 1000lbs more to get up to speed, corner and slow down. No comparison.

$62k for that? Holy chit. No wonder they stay out of bankruptcy. You could get a new Corvette for $10k less (not counting unprecedented $7k rebate) and it has a frame.

You can get a c6 z06 for a lot less than the 60 grand for the new ZL1....

I'd go for target of 35 grand for a nice c6 z06....jmo

Awesome sports car...

That said the 7.21 lap at the "ring" or 7.29 I don't remember the exact number shows the new alpha based camaro ZL1 2017 is a hell of a sports car...

I'm sure it comes with a track warranty just like the c7 z06 and z51....and I know this sounds like heiracy but that ten speed automatic seems to be the transmission to consider...

My money I'd buy a 35 grand c6 z06......but if you want the latest and greatest with 2 plus 2 seating...the ZL1 is the one to beat...

Boils down to...do you want 2 seats or four?

Btw GM is offering employee pricing on the new ZL1 which brings it in around 59 grand..

Default the camaro is enormous

I can't generate enough interest in the new "pony" cars to even read the articles--they are huge slab-sided caricatures that dwarf the originals. From the side, most guys heads are just above the bottom of the window. Honestly, if one of those very heavy cars ever hits something like a Miata, or a flag station, the massive momentum will generate huge destruction. Was coming up on some new frankenCamaro at Pocono last summer, and at the end of the straight he hit his brakes and a giant cloud of black soot poured from the wheel wells--very visible. I actually closed my visor until getting past the thing. 4000lbs? It shifts for you? That's not who you are Froggy! The Corvette forum is suburb. My brother the engineer bought a new Mustang GT, and for reliable, intelligent info he comes to the Corvette forum. Besides, your videos are useful. Of course, none of this is biased, just pointing out a few facts...lol. Hope you opt for the nimble C6Z and stay with us.

FWIW and strictly IMO, I would classify the new ZL1 (like the Ford GT350/R) as a Muscle/Sports Car.
Of course, YMMV...

I wouldn't disagree at all.
The video we have seen is very impressive.

Boils down to...do you want 2 seats or four?
Also, having the most powerful and sophisticated Camaro to date is a big draw too.

Yeah, it's definitely a Style Over Function situation.

Honestly, if one of those very heavy cars ever hits something like a Miata, or a flag station, the massive momentum will generate huge destruction. 4000lbs?
FWIW, the Chevrolet website puts the weight of the ZL1 at 3,883 lbs.

A better option is a new 2017 Camaro SS 1LE
MSRP: $44,400

Mag Ride Suspension
NNP Exhaust, Bigger Radiator, Oil/Diff Coolers
6 Piston Front/4 Piston Rear Brembos
Electronic LSD
285/305 rear Goodyear Supercar 3 (made just for this car)
Recaro Seats
3700 lbs
Better weight distribution than the ZL1
Randy Pobst did 1.37.7 at Laguna Seca in this car. he did 1.38.2 in a
C7 Stingray

C6 z is the worst track car I've ever had, and the c7's are even worse. The one thing that is undeniable is the camaro platform budget and team know how to tune a track car. It can at least run at the track. The vette team and budget just don't give a flyin ****.
