Default Need some help/advice with Kart classing/criteria...

I apologize in advance for being "that guy" who can't simply look up the rules on his own. Know that I did take a shot at it...I just can not find the information I'm seeking so I'm posting in the hopes that someone experienced w/the classes/rules could comment. Here we go:

I want to take our SCCA SOLO II/auto-x'ing adventures to the next level; the "family level". My wife and I already Dual drive my car, but our boy is left out. I'd like to start a Father/son kart building project with him, then when the Kart is done, I'd like for him to be able to run it at events. I've seen kids and karts at events, but I have no idea what the criteria are, so I'm asking now/here. Here are a few unknowns;
*Allowable ages,
*HP or engine sizes?
*What is a "Kart"? Anything off CL with 4 wheels? Or is there some kind of spec kart chassis?
*Do chassis or engine/drive configuration criteria change w/age?
*Safety equipment? (I'd guess helmet, neck brace, fire suit, gloves shoes? IDK)

*What can I do to get my boy some seat time in a this safe, fun, environment that is Solo II? Thanks!

.

Look into"clone karts" or "kid karts". I think the min age is 5, but you really need to find a local track and check their rules. Dirt , asphalt, oval, road course ?? what are you thinking ? Kid karts are small fame spec class. Good to start in, but be prepared to spend some money. You need to find someone who has moved up a class. All the safety gear is a must.

Thanks for the quick reply, and sorry, I guess I didn't clarify. This would be for SCCA SOLO II.

As I mentioned, My wife and I dual drive my 'Vette... adding our boy into the mix w/his own kart would be awesome.

how about Indoor Karting ?

The K1 facility's have adult and kid chassis

Also much less expensive then buying and finding out there isn't the interest in the sport that there seemed to be.

They also have a junior and senior race series which would be a great place to gauge interest and ability

An easy / less expensive way for the whole family to compete or just have fun

If I remember, any kart maybe limited (5hp centrifugal clutch), age is (maybe 8 and older), years ago Reno allowed adults in shifter karts (TTOD). I started karting at 6 back in the Stone Age (mid 50s) and it's still the best work-out going. Check with your region to see if they off a kid's kart class, if not you really should see if a local karting club is in your area, still a great family activity.

Mark.

Here are a couple links for the SCCA Kart program including Jr. Kart info. They should contain the info you're looking for.

Default Karts!

just another reason why I spent so much time on CF!

I hadn't even thought about running my kart at an AX with SCCA...my local PCA region said no dice.
