That's a good photo. That view looks like the mirror is fixed but the housing is a bit larger to allow airflow around the section. Seems like the increased frontal area would make it a wash.

I think you identified the reason why: no room to put a screen in the cockpit.
Well, sure, with the current design. But they could probably design one in. Heck, they could even put some indicators in the helmet rather than a real screen to let them know when a car is coming beside them.

Have a good one,
Mike

Check out the sound at 0:45s in that video. Am I hearing tire chatter? Several different cars made similar sounds in what appears to be the same corner.

I'm pretty sure I'm not hearing the turbo pressure relief system; it's a different tone.

Thoughts?

Yep, this is *testing*, not competing. It looked like they spent quite a bit of time on Medium tires, and maybe Softs.

I'm really curious about the Super-Hard and UltraMegaExtreme-Soft compounds. Tough for me to comprehend using a tire that's *harder* that the Hard compound from last year (which I don't remember ever being used).

Less than a month to go!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Have a good one,
Mike

Good interview with Alonso after his spin. I particularly liked his comments about 6 other teams with their garage doors closed, but his spin being eye candy for the media:

it's freezing cold all over Europe, cold for duck, as they say here. It snowed on the French Riviera and in Rome ! you imagine !

This morning 0°C on the circuit. Few pilots on the tracks, so FIA decided to not stop at 1h am but session non stop. Teams and FIA think about decision to report one track day of this week to monday

Laps and km for day 1 session

Sun appears at 2pm, track 18°, in air 4,4° C. Forecast says snow for tomorrow and rain for thursday. I don't know what instructions the teams can learn from this about the new Pirelli and châssis...

At this time 15h50, (GMT+1 in France)

This cold weather isn't helpful at all.
If a number of test days this week get canceled, I suppose they will have to make it up somehow?

You're right...this is weird.
I'm pretty sure the "hards" were not used last year.
I guess it is possible all of the softer tires have been re-worked over winter.

Alonso has become one of my favorites.
Earlier in his career, he was a haughty driver who had little time for fans or media.
But as he has become older, he has loosened up considerably and has become a real character with a great sense of humor...quick with a smile and a joke.

the S today is the M of 2017. If all teams are ok, a unanimous vote is required, one day may be postponed to Monday. Teams must give their position tonight.

So you're saying the 2018 Soft tire is the same compound as the 2017 Medium? So where in the world (literally) will they use the Hard or Super-hard compounds?

Or am I missing something?

Mike

Good question...
I like the fact there are more compounds, which in theory should give us more dramatic racing, but, of course, that remains to be seen.
