Default High Trans Temp Warning - Feeling Accomplished!

No questions, just feeling accomplished that I pushed the car to show this weakness. Looking at it as another indicator (besides lap times) that I'm improving.

Congrats Dan. From your posts, I like your approach to the sport.

While many might look at us and question why we celebrate the emergence of an issue, your cohorts at the track “get it”.

Enjoy your pending upgrade. 👍

I got this warning too for the first time last Friday... it was also my first HPDE with this car (2004 Z06). Got the warning one lap before the end of the third and final 20 minute session (SCCA Chicago Section HPDE at Autobahn Country Club), so it really didn't hamper me too much, but I'd like to fix it.

I know the ultimate solution is an electric pump and cooler setup (DRM for example), but I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with interim solutions, especially since this just barely 'bit' me (last lap of final session on a pretty hot day)? Fan blowing under the car between sessions perhaps? Wrap the exhaust? Some sort of heat shield between the exhaust and trans?

I'll do the cooler eventually (sounds like a 'next winter' update), but in the meantime, any suggestions to get just a little bit more out of it before I add the cooler?

Sorry to thread-jack, but I figured the OP might be interested to hear the answers also.

How much does heat wrapping the exhaust help with the issue?

I hit the trans temp warning during my track day on Monday too. First time! It was my 4th track day with the car. I have the DRM Diff/Trans coolers here waiting to be installed...looks like I have some work ahead of me.

Wrapping the exhaust from the rear hanger to the top of the over axle bends helped keep heat down in our cars for quite a while. I finally had to go to the coolers. If you are going to wrap i would suggest wearing long sleeves, the stuff itches like crazy.
The exhaust pipes are pretty close to the trans and diff and they are hot we added about 4-5 minutes to the warning with the wrap that being said we run royal purple syncromax and 295+ temps have been seen with no failures, they tend to start shifting harder. We were changing fluid every 5 events without the coolers, now it is annually and the fluid still looks good when changed.

It's a little more comforting to know that temps of 295 were hit with no failures. I backed off at 284 trans temp and felt no issues with the trans operation. Granted, I didn't run it at that temp for long. How many seasons did you run with no trans and diff coolers?

Dan,

You know what you need to do If you need any additional pictures or have questions, just ask.

If you only have time/cash for one cooler, do the diff first. The diff gets really hot, and since it shares a common wall with the transmission (oil/fluid on each side), the diff efficiently transfers heat to the tranny.

I'd love to see pics of mounting brackets for the coolers themselves. I've only seen one thread with pics and would love to get some more ideas before I tackle this job.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay I was away for the weekend the cars get used for HPDE and time trials we run 20-25 minute sessions 4 times a day 2 day events. Our 2 cars are pretty quick for example running an average of 2:05 and a best of 2:01 long course at Watkins Glen on A7's with GM T1 suspensions and spherical bearings both cars have aero.
I do my own trans rebuilds and have not had a temp related failure
after using the royal puple and installing the billet keys brass pads and the steel fork. The cars have 7 years (2 of which had the coolers) on them with 8-9 2day events and 1-2k street miles per year. They are still on the stock GM seals that I installed when I went thru the transmissions and the rear ends.
You have to love these cars we do rod and main bearings every 2 years (due to the loss of pressure even with a 3 quart accumulator and the Improved motor sport pan baffles we pulling some very G's in some turns)
valve springs and timing chains also every 2 years and the cars keep taking the beating.
stock bores and rings one car has 59K and the other has 84K
We run a large Setrab oil cooler and Dewitts radiators with their SPAL fans

KMAGVETTE has a well executed home made cooler setup that he shared with me at WGI a few weeks back. I snapped some pics and I'll post them shortly. This is different than the install that DRM recommends.

Here is a link to the detailed - pic heavy - thread I posted on the DRM cooler install. Hope that this helps.

That's the "one thread" I was talking about. Thanks for documenting the installation so well, I really appreciate it.

Steve,
Nice to meet you too, thanks for stopping over and saying hello. You motivated me to run with no TC for the first time. It was less terrifying that I expected. I liked that the slides I can start just continue a little bit further. I'm sure I'll get crossed up at some point, but I found it pretty eye opening the amount of control you have while this is happening.

I'll certainly let you know about my next trip to WGI, let me know if your eyeing up a Summit or VIR trip also.

Dan
