What is your favorite race car of all time?
I'm not sure why, but I've always loved the Porsche 906. It was the first race car I ever sat in. We went to Expo '67 and it was on display at the German pavilion. There was no rope around it and the doors were open so I climbed in. Nobody said anything. Everyone else must've assumed it was no touch.
It was powered by a rather ordinary 2-liter, 220 hp, air-cooled flat six which propelled it to an amazing top speed of 170 mph. At Le Mans in 1966, the 906 placed 4-5-6-7 behind three factory 427 Ford GTs, but ahead of all the bigger V12-engined Ferraris.
The original owner's manual for one of these was recently auctioned off on BaT for $13,000.

Porsche 917 30. Donohue's Can Am killer.

Drifting
Late 90's Porsche 911 GT1. That or the 917 or 962. As for a modern day race car, the Ferrari FXXK.

Too many choices!
The 906 is a beautiful car.
Since I'm a Corvette guy, it's gonna have to be a Grand Sport coupe or a Greenwood Corvette. Or maybe one of the more recent Le Mans winning Corvettes.
If not a Corvette, then here are my choices based on the criteria that the car has to be both beautiful looking and wonderful to drive:
Lancia 250F, lightweight E Type, GT 40, Lola T70, Chevron B16, Jag C and D Types.
Those are just off the top of my head.
A couple that wouldn't make the cut because they might be beautiful but are scary to drive would be the 935, 917, and 962. Also most modern winged cars because they are both difficult to drive on the limit and also extremely physically demanding.

That last one has been enjoying a very busy retirement.

I made my choice mostly out of nostalgia, but you're right, several of those cars would be way beyond my driving ability. 220 hp in a 1400 lb. car would be plenty for me. Unfortunately my budget won't cover any of the above. I'll have to settle for a Datsun 240Z, BMW 2002, Gen3 Camaro A sedan, etc.

Another one for the GT40. Always loved those cars, especially the smallblocks.

Or just the possibility that you might take it out...
Hard not to like any of the late 60s/early 70s FIA prototypes. Chevron reissued their B16, saw a bunch of them running at the Monterey historics 2 years ago. DAMN that's a good looking car!
I'll take a GT40 Mk II...
