'90 ZR1 Track Car Z07 Brake Upgrade
I'm starting to put the '90 ZR1 track car back together and found out some interesting stuff this week...
First off a shout out to forum vendor Rich Willhoff @ Abel Chevrolet...I purchased my Z07 calipers from him last year and he gave me a killer price. They ordered the items in and had to re-order a few times to finally get the calipers in perfect condition, then carefully wrapped them all up and packed them up and shipped them out. The best customer service I've had from someone I've never physically seen.
So...when push came to shove I just couldn't see ordering the carbon ceramic rotors for the car (at this time). I found a vendor who makes iron replacement rotors for the C7 Z07's and they were 1/2 the price.
Giro Disc shipped them out in 3 days...
The calipers I got a hell of a deal on...looking in the GM catalog these '17 Addicted Red calipers were $200 cheaper (each) than the others, so we snagged them up.
I ordered the C6 Z06 caliper brackets from Van Steel...hoping they would work but not confident they would...
While I've been saving and ordering parts, I've been busy polishing the suspension components for the car...it's going to be strictly track/off-road use only, and it's just my time and some materials so I figured what the hell...
So now was the moment of truth...would this half-cocked hair-brained scheme of mine work? I've already invested some coin in parts not knowing if they would even work...nobody has ever attempted this, so it was a gamble.
The rotors look massive...because they are @ 15.5" in diameter...
So...I tried the Van Steele adapters, and they just wouldn't fit. They fit the steering knuckle but I couldn't get the holes to align on the caliper...so after looking at it for a few minutes and sipping a cold beer I figured "What the Hell..." and tried mounting the caliper directly into the original mounting holes for the J55's...and they fit! (Almost...)
The hole spacing is off by a little more than 1/16"...so the bolts started but they weren't "right". I needed to take the die grinder and oval the holes out a little bit to make it so they wouldn't bind up.
Comparing the rotor and caliper "placement" with my '19 Z07 Grand Sport...they are almost dead on in the right location. If they are off...it's only <1/8".
So...now I need to fabricate some spacers to center the rotor in the calipers...and get the right length bolts to secure them. The bolts should be here Thursday...
Next is the rear end...I have all new seals for the D44 coming. They should be here before the end of the week.
Here is the Street Shop , Inc. billet rear adapter so I can use the e-brake function of the C6/C7's (inside the rotor)...
Anyway...I was excited to see they WILL actually work, and so far it has taken minimal fabrication to get it there. Next week will be rear end work...

I would normally recommend Stoptech "Sport" pads (formerly Street performance pads).
IF..........you are running SLICKS (A7s or Pirelli slicks etc) then you need a full RACE pad. The problem with these race pads is that they are so aggressive that you will be into your anti-skid all the time with street tires.

I would normally recommend Stoptech "Sport" pads (formerly Street performance pads).
IF..........you are running SLICKS (A7s or Pirelli slicks etc) then you need a full RACE pad. The problem with these race pads is that they are so aggressive that you will be into your anti-skid all the time with street tires.

This is going to be a track/autocross only car...it's never going to see the street except maybe an occasional Open Road Race in Fort Stockton...
I'll probably start out with CarboTech XP10's or XP12's to see how they do and adjust from there. I'm going to have PLENTY of cooling air in the front rotors. If these work as well as my Z07 brakes on my 2019 Grand Sport I won't have to use them much...short applications of pedal is all I'll need. I'm starting out mild in the engine department on this one...a crate Gen5 LT1 to start out while I work the bugs out, then progressive horsepower upgrades until I get to 700 FWHP.
I'll be able to fit the equivalent of a 355 tire in back and a 295 in front, so it'll have plenty of tire on the ground. Going to get CCW C14's in 18" diameter so I can get cheap race rubber

I read the part about polishing the suspension and thought “oh cool, a little control arm cleaning...”. But then saw the pictures and said “oh sh*t, that’s bad a$$!” That polishing work is is masterful. Amazing.

The control arms were easy...the D44 on the other hand was a nightmare. Since it's cast...it was MUCH rougher and took a lot of time. Even then...I didn't go all the way to a show-car polished finish on it because this IS a track car. I want it to look good, but perfection isn't necessary.

Great to see another C4 coming to the track! I've got a '92, and there are usually two other C4's in my race group here in So Cal (with VARA).

Plus...it LOOKS stunning in person, and if I'm going to do this I want it to look nice. It's going to be my first non-white car in nearly 30 years...plus, "all Corvette's are red"

Nice work! I see your'e using SPC UCAs. I have there UCAs and LCAs on my 69 Camaro and I really like them. They make it pretty simple to align the front end once you get the hang of how they work.. What prompted you to install those on your ride?

Found almost all the rear-end bits & pieces for this thing in storage...once the seals get here I can start assembling!
D44 bat-wing, rear knuckles and half-shafts on the car awaiting next stage of installation.
Van Steel coil-overs with QA1 double-adjustable shocks.
Banski trailing links, strut-rods and toe-rods.

I started putting the DANA 44 together over the weekend. The input yoke and the stub-axles were looking pretty nasty next to this freshly polished carrier so I hit them with a wire wheel and cleaned them up before hitting them with some paint.
There was a BUNCH of rouge inside the carrier from the polishing phase, so I first had to liberally spray the inside down with engine degreaser and wash it out with hot water. After that, I put it out in the hot Texas sun and let it sit for a few hours to bake it dry...
It's pretty clean in there now...once I got ready to assemble the carrier with the bat-wing I liberally sprayed the inside with WD40 to keep everything from rusting until I get it in and fill it with gear oil.
It's now assembled and ready to stab back into the car...most likely sometime today.
I should have some more progress pictures later today...

I had clearance issues with my coilovers and the Banski products.
