Default New AutoX Tire/Wheel Setup

After lots of time researching/thinking and asking questions here on the Forum I finally pulled the trigger on tires and wheels to replace my OEM C6Z06 wheel with stock sized NT01 tires. Thanks to everyones that helped me.

I got MMR flow forged wheels 18x12 and 18x10 they do not have custom offsets. They are 50 rear and 30 rear offsets.
I got the Rival S1.5 335/30/18 rear and RE71 285/30/18 fronts

I like the combo very much. It took me a few runs to get used to the change from NT01 and having 18 instead of 19 rears. The difference in rear torque and better grip in the back sent me into a few 360* spins.

Here are some pictures and my best run of the day.

I have been following your research with much interest in your final decision. Tomorrow will hopefully be my last Auto X on the OEM MPSS. They are 2010 date code on my 2012 Z. I have the 19/20 cup wheels.

I like the wheels you chose. More or less $ than Finspeed or Forgestar?

Finspeed are top dollar wheels (and great)
Forgestar are custom built but 1/2 the cost of Finspeed
MMR are less and than Forgestar but no custom offsets

I forgot to mention that I kept the hot tire temps at: 32-33F and 30R. Had to bleed off air throughout the session as we had 8 runs in a row. Side roll over was right to the tire indicator marks.

Any advise on tire pressures?

Lots of guys are cooling tires with water spray. I ordered a spray bottle but have no idea how or when to use it????????????

Why run two different brand wheels?

Oh and how does MORE grip in the rear put you into a spin? LOL

The wheels are not different they are the same MMR

My old wheels were OEM.

The car is more tail happy now because the front wheel is 10 inch instead of the OEM 9.5 and the RE71 on the front feels stickier than the rear Rival. Also the front tire went from 35 ratio to 30. And like I said the 18 inch rear compared to 19 inch OEM has more torque. But to be clear ............ I like this setup and with a little more seat time to get used to it I'm sure I will like it even more.

Am I explaining this okay?????

DOH...I meant why different tires. I assume sizing availability or class limitations?

And do you mean MRR wheels? I can't find anything for MMR.

Just messing with you about the spinning thing. LOL

Putting those two different tires on the front and rear of the car would drive me nuts. The BS and BFG (1.0) drive really differently. Hearing that you spun a bunch of times makes sense. I have not driven the BFG 1.5, but even if the tires had exactly the same carcass the difference in compounding alone would be tricky to deal with. IMO.

LLoyd

I have no doubt that you could drive the crap out of this setup !!!!!!
Going to the BS 285/30 over the Rival 275/35 gives me a little more meat with lower profile. It is a crisper turn in and I could feel it, and liked it.
I didn't make up this combo. There are others that have used and like it.
You gonna show up at any event ?????

Are you limited to a 285 front or what was your reason in going with the RE71R instead of a 315 Rival in the front?

This is the questions I was getting to as well. Keeping a 315 square allows you to rotate tires too assuming you can run the same offsets. Worst case it is a dismount/remount to rotate.

Hey Rich

I didn't want to get involved with the 11 inch front wheels. I have seen at track and heard of guys hitting brake duct, some how I already have some on one side. Somebody even said to consider the brake duct a consumable !! Also there can be outer fender contact, one driver showed me how he had to sand down the fender lip.

So instead of worrying about all that and what offsets to get (no seems to agree on the correct offset). I got 18x10 front wheel and the 285 was the biggest tire to fit correctly.

I am not kidding! The BS is sharp, pointy, and makes good grip even when not fully up to temp. The BFG is vague, slidey, and has a much narrower temp window. You're setting yourself up for a tricky car to drive.
I don't have set of A-Street legal tires right now, so no events for me...but I should come out again, I renewed my membership to go run the Time Trial event that was held up at Thunderhill in April.

I wouldn't run a 315 square on a C6Z because they seem to like some stagger, but I'd definitely want a larger tire up front.

You can definitely get a 315 on the front with brake duct rub only at full lock. It does require the right offset, but I'd want all the grip I could up front. You made the right choice if you don't want to chance a little rub and wanted to keep the right bias in diameter.

Everything is a trade off...........
I'm more nimble with narrower fronts and harder to clip cones.
These wheels look great to me compared to the Forgestars and I got a great deal on them. Plus they were delivered the day after I ordered no waiting months for build.

315 Rivals on 10.5” +36 wheels are perfect with no rubbing on the brake ducts. I did get some rubbing on my outer fender on full compression at 1.28G’s, but that was on #550 front springs. I upped them to #800 and no more rubbing.

Nice driving. That was a much more open layout than we had this weekend. More like a road course than go kart track.

Fun stuff...
