Answer
To me, a matching numbers C2 means that the VIN and the stamp on the engine match, proving that the original engine is still in the car. Trim tags match interior and exterior. Numbers matching can also extend to the transmission, alternator, starter and other components. But then again maybe I am just crazy

I liked your definition minus the “proving originality” part and ending after the word “transmission.”
