Default Chambered Pipes (Up to 4"!)

I was given the name and phone# of a guy in Ohio who worked for Walker muffler, and who OWNS the crimping equipment necessary to make chambered pipe, in S/S or aluminized, up to 4" in diameter! His name is Jim Klingensmith, and his phone# is:

The bigest available chambered pipe at present is LESS than 2 1/4" I.D.
This is OK for MOST HP smallblocks, but causes SERIOUS performance losses on Big Blocks. THis guy can evidently make stainless steel and aluminized chambered side pipes for the C-2 and C-3 in ANY size, UP TO 4".
Guess no one here has a side pipe High Performance Big Block C-2 , who's interested in gaining nearly 100 HP .......

Sounds great, I think I have seen them on this board before.
Is he a member of the forum? One thing I recall the stock covers
cannot be used with the larger pipe. Has anyone heard a 4" chambered pipe?
Do you think it might be a bit loud on the street? I have a set of 4"
thinwall straight side pipes I have not yet had the nerve to try.
Let us know how they sound and post some pics.
As I recall there was a member that could not find what he was looking for
so he built his own. Then started taking orders. Is it the same guy?
He had info on his web page.
Oh, one more thing.... 100hp?

MassVette,
I have an old friend in south Miami(very well known in NCRS circles)that has a set of 3 inch chambered exhaust on his VERY hot 67 coupe. They fit under his side exhaust covers and apparently gave him a substantial performance boost. He did mention to me that whoever made them would make another set.I havent had the car to take him up on this but would love to.He said the noise wasnt a whole lot more than stock sidepipes. So it can be done!!!!!!.........Bill S

396 RAT,
These haven't been on the board before. The guy on the C-3 board is JCL. He's making 3 1/2" spiral baffles for the Hooker side exhaust. Also, 3" for the factory-style c-2 and c-3 exhaust. I have the 3 1/2 " baffles in my Hooker side pipes, connected to a ZZ/502, in my 1979 C-3. They are great performance boosters, and are quieter than the 2" Hooker glasspack inserts! However, In this instance, I'm referring to someone else who MAKES chambered pipe and exhaust systems up in all different diameters. Hes NOT been on the board to my knowledge.
As for the HP difference: I had my car dynoed for a "baseline." The 502 dynoed out at 95 HP LESS with the 2" Hooker inserts! Unbelievable loss! The spiral baffles that I replaced them with have an effective area of approx. 3 1/4"
I based my estimate upon this.

oleredalert,
I wonder if it's the same guy? I was referred to this guy by a fella from a nice Camaro website called http://www.firstgen.com He said the guy worked for Walker for years and had their machinery for crimping the pipes! These sound like a VERY interesting approach to the problem of exhaust restriction on the C-2 and C-3 platforms. One would think that this would be of GREAT interest, especially with the popularity of Big Block and HP Small Blocks! I don't think most Corvette guys realize HOW MUCH H.P. they're "throwing away" with the stock systems. GM itself STRONGLY recommends 3" systems on the Big Blocks.

Your right! It was the C3 board.
OK, you now have my attention.
Yesterday I just picked up new factory side
side exhaust for down the road.
Will put them in the rafters with the stock manifolds.
I wanted a set while I can still get them from GM for someday.
Not today.
My 65 396 has side exhaust with 2" headers installed.
With large dia. 36" Glass packs that just make it under the covers.
I would be interested in finding out more?
Do I dare ask how much? :bb

396 RAT,
I don't know details about the chambered pipe guy. I was hoping someone would call him that was in the market for a BB non-restrictive 'Factory' style sidepipe setup. I'd like to know myself if he can do the setup for the C-2 and C-3. Nonetheless, I am VERY satisfied with the performance and sound of the spiral baffles in my Hooker sides. I just wish they had burn shields. :mad (Ouch!)

There is a place in Ohio that makes many types of exhaust pipes for all kind of apps.. They have done plenty of chambered vette sidepipes. I think they have the capability to do whatever you want. I know they can manufacture a regular set in aluminum or ss to your sound specs. Basically if you want them to be quieter than the stock ones they can do this. I think they can also do the bigger diameter sizes on special request,. I have the catalog at home so e-mail if anybody needs the number. The name of the co. is stainless works, I just can't remeber what city they are in. In fact this co. is the one Bentley references in his 427 vette book. :jester
