Clock on 1965 Covertible
Anyone care to post their experience with clock repair on C2 vette's. I have 65 convertible and would like to repair/fix/restore clock. Curious about repair of original electrical clock, or do a quartz gut replacement and keep original clock face and housing. Would appreciate input from those who have done this...Thx.....Gene in Dallas

I'm no expert but i was told that the quartz the second hand will tick like the clock you hang on the wall you see each second the org. runs smooth.I all so was told most of the clocks like your's and mine all they need is to be cleand and oiled and they will work again.but it will get dirt in it and it will stop again.but mine took 35 years to stop the first time so i may just clean mine and see if it still will work.

I did a clean on my orig 65 clock ( used Acetone ) and also replaced those crazy "kick" coil contacts. It lasted about 4 months and then the coil went up in smoke and blew a fuse. :mad
So I bought a quartz movement from Zip and did the replacement. Very easy and yes you keep all the hands, face, and ****. Only can tell by the way it moves as its running.

I add a quartz movement to my clock 20 months ago. It works great. The only time I need to reset it, is for the time change. :chevy [IMG][/IMG]

I cleaned the clock in my '58 and it was pretty easy. I took the clock out of the case and sprayed the heck out of it with electrical contact cleamer (I'd stay away from acetone). Then I pushed the winder (looks like a lever at the back) and voila, it worked! There's also an article about this for C1s on the ncrs Restorer CD-ROM. The contact cleaner costs about $15 for a pretty small can and is available at electronics stores. It's normally used to clean noisy pots (*****) on stereos.

If it is fixable, fix it. If it is toast, a quartz conversion has to look and sound like an original to pass judging. I got a quartz mechanism out of an 1980s Poncho in a wrecking yard that fits in the case. It looks and sounds like the original, but I had to cut and thread the stem to take the **** off the 66 clock. IMO, if you don't care about judging, get the cheapest quartz conversion. :chevy

Restored the clock on my 67 coupe in january. Used a quartz mechanism and I havn't reset it at all except for 1 hour time change. Had it done by Corvette Instruments, and it runs and looks like new except for smooth second hand movement. I saved the origional mechanical movement just in case, but for now I'm very happy with Quartz.
