Default Got My Tax Bill For This Coming Year Today -

Well,

Received the tax bill for my vehicles for the upcoming fiscal year. My 67 327/350 came in at a whole $500.00 (it was $750.00 last year). Even better thing is that RI is phasing out the property tax on vehicles over the next several years, so with the $3500.00 exemption for this coming FY, I pay the big nil....Gotta love these old junkers the town thinks are worthless...I'll be purchasing a C5 once the tax is totally phased out in 3 years.....On priniciple. I won't pay more taxes on a single car than my house.

v/r
Bob

There really is tax on cars in RI? :( That is outragous!!

Oh well, the county I live in has such high taxes. About $3500 per 100K of worth. Not very good here either. :mad

Enjoy,
Curt

Personal property taxes on CARS? Good grief, what a ripoff! Time for a "Boston Tea Party"! In Michigan, my '57 Vette plates cost $22.00 each year, and my '69 Z/28 is $24.00; would be $10.00 less each, but they have personalized plates, which are $10.00 extra per year.

Good ole NC had the good sense to title mine as a 1966 chev 2dr conv on the title...tax rate $.04 as it's value less than $50makes me wonder which hubcap spinner they based that on.... Tom

Yes, we pay yearly on our cars. :mad This state depends on property taxes of all types to support itself, especially education (the sales tax is 7%, too). The rates are set individually by the towns. In my town the rate is $39.00 per thousand value (they use the NADA blue book, I believe). So, my 1996 GMC Jimmy SLE get valued at $13,625 this year. With the $3500 state exemption, I'm paying $394.88 this year on my truck. Imagine what my Dad will pay on the 2002 Z06 he ordered last month. That's why a lot of people who aren't "who gives a crap rich" around here lease, their jags, bimmers, mercedes, etc - the leases usually cover property taxes. I bet for some who owns a 70$k car (new) out right, they pay about 15 to 20$k in property taxes if they keep the car for 8 to 10 years (I didn't do the math exactly). The rate on real estate is about 22.00 per thousand at 100% evaluation (some towns in this screwed up state have higher rates, but at 60% of evaluation, etc). It used to be evaluations were not as bad at market value, but now the towns are get smart, so my property taxes on my house this year will top 5000.00

It get's better - because Providence (yet, just like that puking TV show) sold a lot of property to Brown University, Johnson & Wales U., and other non-prof, tax exempts, the rate for automobiles and tangible property is around $65.00 per thousand. So the East Side doyen with the 100$k Mercedes S-Class is paying around $6500.00 a year on a car!

The damn Governor (a republican) is trying to halt the car property tax roll back since the state has to make up the difference in lost revenue to the town.

WHOA.... No wonder my friend from RI always has junky cars!!

Don't feel too bad, the property taxes in the little not-so-great- town where I live are killer. We only have one school in our "hamlet" K-8th grade.. property taxes on my house over $8500.00 :mad :mad One of my neighbors has a "summer" house here - he usually resides in NYC - pays over $28,000.00 in taxes - Nice house, though.

FLA is nice, but I'm not in heat/humidity and I like having 4 seasons, and I'm a snow freak (do have an uncle in Naples with a 60 fuelie, though). I didn't realize that a lot states had no auto property tax..I know VA doesn't - I heard their governor was elected on a no auto prop tax platform....we need one of them...

JohnZ....you keep torturing me with that mention of a 69 Z/28 (Dover White with black stripes was my first car) and I'm hoping to get one back someday (sold my right after college after "a me or the car demand from the woman). :(

They're trying to phase out the property tax here in SC also. I have a 94 C4 and I pay around $350 per year. However on our 2001 Montero Sport it was almost $700. The good thing is that when you go to purchase a vehicle, you pay 5% of purchase price or a flat $300 which ever is LESS in sales tax. So, if you buy a new vette for $50000, then you only pay $300 in sales tax instead of $2500-$3500. But they will get it back in property taxes down the road, so it's the ol' "Pay me now or pay me later". I guess the State is going to get it one way or another anyhow. :yesnod: :smash:

The '69Z is Fathom Green/White Stripes; unmolested/unrestored original car, 32K miles. Original owner stored it IN HIS HOUSE (lower-level walkout rec room, next to the pool table) for 15 years from 1978-1993. Engine bay shown below:

John,

You're going to make me cry. Mine was nice, but not that nice. If you ever want to sell, we should talk. In his house? That's devotion. I actually slept in my car a couple of times in High School (I was restoring it and could not wait to drive it, so I would sit out in the garage in it at night, dreaming. Fell asleep a couple of times, awoke drooling on the steering wheel..

Now I really do have to save my pennies and track down my car.

Bob
