in my opinion.....
i'd take the 383 hands down. The 383 has 1/2" more stroke so you add
28 cubes ( which adds up to 30-35 hp in a street motor) and the torque! wow!  I'd suggest precision balancing the rotating assembly for sure. as far as reliability.... the 383 will be just as reliable . maybe not at 7000 rpm's but if you have a street motor with a hydraulic cam you'll never see over 6000-6500 anyway. remember.... there's no replacement for displacement!!! just my OPINION.. see ya guys ! :D

what are the tradeoffs?
RPM vs. Torque. :boxing
Some like gut wrenching Torque,
Others prefer high HP. spinning it way up
to make the HP
and sacrificing Torque.
I fall into the 2nd group. (over square rules! ;) )
But its purely an individual thing......
Most fall into the 1st group. (I think)
I have heard of balancing problems with some 383's,
but by now I bet they have the bugs out of 'em.
Take a ride in one before you decide. Cam choice is also
an important consideration with either engine.

I have had no problem with my 383. The extra displacement (and heads) has given me gobs more torque and hp than I can handle. Externally, it looks like the same old stock small-block I always had (I even painted the aluminum heads stealth orange). The only downside to the 383 was the time it took for my engine-builder to have it finished - he had to do some extensive machining on the block to get the new internals to clear everything. It's not a high revving engine (power starts to fade at around 5500-6000rpm, due to the Performer intake) but off the line, the torque REALLY kicks. My vote is to stroke it.
