Default core support removal

hey gang,

anyone know how difficult it is to remove the core support without pulling the body off? is it even possible..

i'm converting my car from Carb to FI and need the hole on the left side for the "S" tube to mount to.

I'd prefer not to cut my coresupport all up, so if it isn't too hard to remove the original, and pop in a FI repro with the hole (or I could cut the hole with a plasma cutter on a standard repro Core Support quite easily)

if they come out without too much trouble...

any ideas? i'd go out and look at the car myself, but I don't have it here at the moment. and before I go through the touble of bringing it home to do the work, i'd like to have my ducks in a row..

thanks
Aaron

Default Removing core support

Araron,
  1. Remove fan shroud
  2. Remove radiator
  3. Make note of the number of shims and their location
  4. Remove core support
You probably could do it without removing the hood, however, it would make it easier with the hood removed.

thanks Dave,
i remember we talked about it... and I also found that someone removed the X brace in front of the radiator... so I should probably replace it anyway, i'm going to try to get a Dewitts for the car too, so going through the trouble of removing the radiator won't be a waste of time... if tom can get me a radiator soon enough.

thanks

Three bolts on each side. Two vertical bolts in the bottom along with two horizontal bolts into the rounds braces. The two vertical bolts on the bottom are in an open cage. They may try to spin when you loosen them. Stick a screwdriver between the cage and the nut to hold it. As posted above, note and replace shim packs in the appropriate locations.

The location of the air cleaner housing on the left apron is critical. If you get it in the wrong location, your flexible hose won't mate to the air meter adaptor and/or your hood will strike the top of the air cleaner when you try to shut the hood.

And, after referencing the shims in quantity and location from original, be prepared to add or subtract shims in any location as the replacement radiator support may not have the same dimensions as your original.

The support could be different. The body could also have had collision damage and repaired without consideration given to proper shimming. I WOULD LEAVE 1/8th interference fit at the radiator support/frame interface.
