Fan on 396....Correct Fan
My 65 396 Vette Fan is one of those fans with a "non-symmetrical" fan blade layout. In other words, all 5 blades are not spaced evenly around the Fan hub. It looks sort of like 3 blades on one side and 2 blades by themselves on the other. I saw a picture the "non-symmetrical" fan in Zip Corvette products catalog today and it said it was for a 327 and it listed a different fan part number for the 396, but the catalog did not show a picture of the 396 fan. Makes me wonder if I have a fan from a 327 on my 396 car ? Anyone know.
Can you tell me if your 396 has a 5 blade fan with 3 blades on one side and then two blades on the other. A
"? That is what mine has and a catalog I got indicates I may have the wrong fan ?

Re: Fan on 396....Correct Fan (Elmer)
By talking to Mag Red Man I found out
the correct rivets on a 65 396 fan are round,
where others are oval. (rivets holding the blades on)
Mine are round on one side, like a 1/2 circle almost
where the other side of the rivet is round with a flat face (under cut really).
The farthest distance between fan tips is about 16 3/4"
while other blades are much closer.
The 3 blades, and 2 blades apart is correct.
Does this help?
P.S give us some history about your car! :smash:
We are hungry for 396 info. :nono:

Re: Fan on 396....Correct Fan (396 RAT)
It is a 396 convertible with 75,000 original miles on it. Same original motor transmission etc. Car was Nassu blue and repainted yellow. I am 4th owner. Owner one had the car from 1962 to 1970 in Ohio. Car was purchased in Ohio by 2nd owner and he kept it until 1998. In 1998 it underwent a restoral and is in nearly perfect condition. I purchased it from the restorer who lives in Florida. The car has been in three shows and won 1st place in each one. I will post some pictures when I get around to doing a website. You can see a current picture of the car at http://www.corvettewave.com. It is the yellow convertible on the home page. Click on it for a large photo....and as you say, it can pass anything but a gas station. Elmer in McKinney Texas (Dallas area)

Elmer, to elaborate a little on what 396RAT said. The heads of the rivets should be flat like a button, versus big and round like a mushroom head.
The fan blades are staggered, because Chevy found out if they were evenly spaced, it sounded like an airplane going down the highway!

Thanks for solving the mystery of the staggered fans. A Zip products catalog showed the same fan on a 327 also. Is it correct that a 327 used the same staggered fan blade ? Thx  Elmer

I think your fan is correct. I put a 7 blade for an 67 AC motor and seem to improve cooling slightly. Of course it is not correct, but i am willing to compromise to improve cooling.

Re: Fan on 396....Correct Fan (Mag Red Man)
Mine was originally delivered in Minnesota. Its optioned with the standard BB stuff, plus sidepipes, KO wheels, PW,PB, PS was added later. Previous owners say the car was delivered originally with a 4.56 rear end. I am running a 3.70 now. The original engine was removed and substituted with a 283 in the mid seventies during the fuel crisis. The original engine was been rebuilt and reinstalled.

Riogrand, I saw a Maroon-looking 65 396 Coupe in Richardson. So now I know of three 396's in DFW area.
