Default 62 Tire/Rim size

Looking for some thoughts/advice... my 62 has a new crate motor... and as such is somewhat overpowered... it currently has Goodyear Eagle GT P215/65R15 tires on it... I am contemplating putting some wide whitewall tires on it for that nostalgic look... should I be concerned about stability? Thanks in advance...

depends what size tires you put on it..... 6.70x15's would be a real handful....

The 215X65 tires have a nice stance and fit the wheel well. It took me a long time in selecting a good tire for the body and thats what I finally came up with. The 60`s have a low sidewall like donuts and 70`s are too tall. I would think you would get sick of 670`s in a hurry. Too tall and narrow in my opinion.

I use a steel painted 15x6 on the front and a 15x7 on the rear with dogdish caps and 225/75R15 tires. My intent is to create the look of the cars with HD brakes and wide wheels (which were only 15x5.5). This gives me plenty of tire for driving, cruising, moderate performance (this car no longer gets hard core abuse) and its taller size helps a little with fuel economy (Lord knows we all need help with gas mileage with today's gas prices!!!!!!!!).
Also, if you have the stock 62 front suspension/steering, a fat tire on the front can be somewhat taxing on the early technology of these old frontends.

that's the style i'm trying to emulate on my 62. that's why i run 215x75x15s; problem is that with the 8" rallys i use, the wheel sticks out enough that the sidewall will hit the rear wheelwell lip if i don't use airshocks. damned if it do, damned if i don't....

If you specifically want to use Ralleys, you are going to have to back down 1in and use 15x7 Ralleys to keep them from rubbing. Quite honestly, the 15x7s are relatively common because MANY cars of the 70s used them such as Monte Carlos. These wheels WILL NOT have the 4 nubs that are necessary to retain 56-62 style full wheel covers, but the bumps on the center section have 4 good bumps to retain dogdish caps. IF you wanted to use the stock type 62 full wheel covers, you can have a GOOD welder weld for nubs on each of the Ralley wheels to retain the full wheel covers. We just did this for a friend on a set of 15x7 Ralleys and it worked great!

I just had some 15x6's made up for my 57 that have the correct outers for full hubcaps. I specified the back spacing that I wanted. Cost was about $70 per wheel.

Alright... so I guess the Eagle GTs I have on... 215/65R15 are the best fit size wise... so a nice 1' whitewall tire in that size should give the car the more classic look... since I have the original rims and caps...

Hello Oriondriver. Any chance you're still on this forum and you still have this 62. I would love to see some side or 3/4 photos of these tires/wheels installed. To me the stance of a car is really important. I've seen to similar cars and one had that "right" stance and the other did not. Love to see some photos.

Here is a link to my 57 with 225/70R15s on 6" wide Keystone Klassics with stock back spacing. This is as big as you can go with 6" wheels with stock back spacing with a 70 series tire.

Lots of excellent information here and I need to sort out the back spacing issue. With the stock 15" wheels/tires installed there seems to be a lot of head room in both front and rear wells. Looks like the real problem will be choosing the right backspace to avoid the leaf spring and deciding how much if any tire I want outside the fender lip. I really like the "froggy" look (beefy tires) of the 60's and 70's, where a vette looked like it was ready to jump, but you can kill the looks with too much tire just as easily. A cars stance is so important to its overall looks for me.
