66 How to Remove Steering Wheel?
I'm trying R & R my turn signal switch. How does the horn button come off?

The thing is once you get the horn button off you will not be able to see the turn signal switch. To get to the horn switch you will have to remove the steering shaft from the car then you will see the turn signal switch. This will require disconnecting the shaft from the steering box and the clamp from the firewall. The shaft will slide out and you will see the turn signal switch on the steering column. It's not that bad to do yourself. Dave

Check the attached PDF file. It should give you a feel for the components you will be looking at. As JohnZ says above, you will need to pull the hub. The wheel comes off by removing the 6 phillips-head screws around the perimeter. Depending on your wheel puller I suppose you could leave the wheel attached to the hub and pull them together.
Good luck!

John do you mean pull the hub? If I pull just the steering wheel by removing the 6 screws is the horn plunger and that is about it. Am I forgetting something? I chose to pull the steering wheel with the hub attached and disconnect from the rag joint. This reduces the risk that can be associated with pulling the hub. JMO that is easier. Dave

I just chose to undo the steering shaft from the rag joint then pull the column out. Just a different way of completing the same task.
Here is a good pic another forum member posted before. If you pull the steering wheel by it self you will not even see the turn signal switch. You will either have to use a hub puller and pull the hub off or pull the steering shaft..
Here is a good thread about rebuilding your steering column with some great information from 62Jeff.. Dave

Here's a few pics of what you'll see when you pull the horn button. As John indicates, you can pull the wheel and hub together. I've done it that way.

Hey Greg,
It a snap. I just pulled my steering wheel today. If you have problems with your steering wheel coming off, Let me know I can help. Been there done that. If you are going to replace your wiring harness, the National Corvette Museum is selling new steering column wiring harness on E Bay. I bought one a couple of weeks ago for 50.00. They must have several, there is one on e bay now. Starting bid is 50.00, but no one bid against me.
Hope you like the hard top pic'

I was able to get at my turn signal switch and replace it without removing the steering shaft...
66 Coupe... Here's what I did:
Disconnect battery.
Pull horn button.
Remove nut holding steering hub to shaft.
MARK THE SHAFT TO LINE UP WITH THE MARK ON THE HUB.
Pull hub with steering wheel puller. Wheel is still attached to hub.
Remove turn signal arm.
Disconnect turn signal from wiring from harness.
Remove three screws holding switch to the switch cover.
Remove the two screws holding the steering column to the dashboard.
Yank the switch wires halfway out - to get past the sheath - loosens things up.
Remove the steering column mast retainer.
Slide the switch farther out, dragging the switch cover with it.
Slide the mount bracket off the column, bringing the rest of the cable with it.
I still have to pull the steering shaft, but that's because I want to replace the rag joint. And maybe I'll paint the column while I'm in there...
