I'm having a problem with one of the brake lights in my '64. This is on the right hand side. The turn signal works fine but I have no brake light. The turn signal and brake light works on the left side. In looking at the wiring diagrams it looks like the signal is combined in the trun signal switch.
If anyone has any other ideas where the problem is I can trouble shoot this before taking the steering apart that would be great and possibly save me the pain of taking the steering column apart.
I know that this will be starting at the beginning. I would assume you have had changed the bulb. Next would be to make sure that you have a good ground at the housing. Then it would be good to check where the rear harness plugs into the front harness. Then the last resort is to replace the turn signal switch.
I always thought that most of these tail light problems were turn signal switch related. However I've seen more and more to be corrected by fixing ground problems within the circuit. Dave
I have checked the bulb, It is a dual element bulb and both are good. The running light element works fine with the head lights on, and the other element is both the trun signal and brake light. this works with the trun signal but not the brake light.
I went through a similar drill on my '65. Someone had been into the turn signal switch before me and one of the copper ribbon switchs was routed on the wrong side of the little plastic posts. I was able to reroute the copper ribbons and it worked for a while, but they had really lost their ability to hold their shape so eventually just bought a new turn signal switch.
That’s what I though I would need to do. Back online for more parts... I just love old cars, at least we can work on them...... Its part of the therapy
I was going to ask if these are rebuild able or not worth the effort?
