Believe it or not, but there is actually such a thing as speedo cable lube. You pull the cable out of the housing/sleeve and wipe a thin coat of the lube on it. It's available from most parts stores in a small tube.

Yes, Mr. Zip Kable-Ease made by AGS works well. Google it.

No doubt there is a "special" lube for speedo cables. But, as far back as the Civil War, I've always used a good chassis grease with ZERO problems.

Engine oil here, feed the cable core out of a coffee can with a 1/4" of oil in the bottom.

Going from memory again (which is a dangerous thing for me!!!), I believe the main difference in the speedo cable grease and chassi grease is that the speedo cable grease has some graphite added.

(As I seem to recall . . . ) Either will work well, I suspect. PS Most instructions I've seen tell you not to lube the upper 3-4 inches of the cable at the speedo head!!

White lithium is what used to be recommended. Right, don't lube the top of it.

Default top of cable

I concur. Too much grease or lubed to high works it way into the speedometer mechanism and gums up the works. Creates a messy problem as well

Default how hard is it to replace speedp and tach cable?

HI cable guy/s and or gals. I am considering buying a 63 SWC that the owner said needs speedometer and tachometer cables. Assuming that will fix the inop gauges, Is this an easy fix or does the whole cluster come out? $ for parts estimate? .

You should not have to pull the cluster for that ! That should be an easy fix (if that's the problem).

Replacing the cables is a snap, but totally inoperatve speedo and tach... you may be looking at other issues.
