This is back when I didn't know anything about these old vettes....I know a LITTLE more now at least. I run Mobil 1 15W-50W now with the proper zinc/phosphorus content.
Hopefully this 'zombie' thread will return to the grave..

My '61 has solid lifters - need I say more...and I don't want to ignite an old thread on this topic and bore everyone. But, I need an easily available source of a Hi-ZDDP oil (I don't want to use additives) - I have CarQuest, Napa, AutoZone, Advance Auto, WalMart etc. nearby. Do any of these guys have what I need ? Does the Valvoline Motorcycle 4-stroke oil do it ? I want a brand name please that is in one of the stores mentioned - don't just tell me to find some diesel oil. Thanks in advance.
Many of the diesel oils with higher Phosphorus also contain “higher levels of detergent and dispersant” which compete for surface area with the ZDDP which can reduce its effectiveness. During the development of the current API SM engine tests, high phosphorus diesel engine oil was run in a flat tappet, push rod engine test and it failed the wear requirements with worse results than most low Phosphorus passenger car oils. Also modified cams with higher lift often require stronger or dual valve springs. All of these modifications increase load on the valve train and increase the likelihood of wear on cams and tappets.
Quoted in part from: Modern Oils in Older Engines, by: Neil McTavish AATM at Castrol.
I suggest Joe Gibbs oil, they also have break in oil, as well as the best oil available that has the right amount of ZDDP needed for flat tapped camshafts. Check them on line and see what their ingredients are and why, don’t beat yourself up trying to understand environmental friendly/emission type oils that remove significant amounts of lubricating properties bi-monthly. Check out Joe Gibbs oil “and don’t worry about it”

I use 10w-30 Hot Rod Synthetic oil that has 1270 ppm of ZDDP at 9.99 qt. in my 1961 fuelie, it also has a protectorant resisting corrosion when put into yearly storage. Used by the US Government on stored military vehicles.
Ease of mind and confidence is bliss

That would be nice Chuck...its a little embarrassing to see how little I knew back then when I first got my C1! But I guess we've all been there.

Wow - not even close on the spelling Jack!
That would be a hypochondriac and I plead "not guilty" to that one.
That would be as bad as adding a 3rd latch onto a vintage Corvette soft top just
cuz I was scared of a little water once in a while.

Walmart carries a motor oil formulated for older engines with solid lifters right on the shelf with the regular stuff. It carries warnings about using on modern cars with catlytic converters and has the high zinc. Doug.

What Coves and Plasticman told you was just about perfect. My partners and I own a plant near Manchester England that makes ZDDP, ZDP, and 50 other non-metallic EP additives that all the oil packagers buy to to formulate their oils.
If you will pay the freight, I will give you a 55 drum of ZDDP and you can repackage it and send to all the guys on the c-1 c-2 forum.
I have run my solid lifter 283 for 40 years and 180,000 miles with no problems. I used a spark ignition motor oil with ZDP until about 1980 and then have used diesel motor oil since. Most cam lobe wiping problems are simple bad break in procedures.
The ZDDP tends to break down over miles (as does the non-metallic EPs), just change the oil every 2000-3000 miles and you have all the additives you need.
Now days it is nearly impossible to even buy a bad motor oil.

Well seeing as I'm looking for the right oil combo for my rebuilt engine and this is where google sent me (after one of those pesky search things ) ..I thought to contribute.
I qouted the new price vs the $10.00 from 4 yrs ago.
Zombie or not folks still need to access infoand that was all I intended to do, after the number of replies seems several folks still have interest.

I use Z-Alt and love the 10+ degrees that my operating temp has gone down.

No thanks - Mobil 1 is off-the-shelf at my FLAPS and much cheaper...
I also sold my ZDDP Plus additive to a forum member last summer...don't use (or need) it now..
