1966 L88 COPO - Are there documented cases of this????
#61
I had always understood that Judski's yellow/black stripe and Otis Chandler's white one were the real deal. The first time I saw the orange convt with Gulf stickers was in Springfield 93, I think. Wasn't it an automatic??? Can't imagine a ZL1 with AT. The orange one was the one everyone doubted at the time, only because it had just surfaced.
Does anyone really know about the white one and the orange one?
Was the orange Gulf car an L88 or am I right about it being a ZL1?????

John, your opinion is respected and the American Heritage Award was offered to the production SR cars. The owners have declined as they believe that the first production cars which left the factory with RPO race options are two of the most important production Corvettes made.
Ed Cole saved the car in 1966 by making it into a performance car and making these cars were part of the process.
NCRS mission statement states that is " dedicated to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes ". Our point is history.

the orange one is a ZL-1 as i worked on that car when it was brand new as well as the 68 L-88 that was traded in on the ZL-1. i have know the owner since 1967 and is a very close friend of mine today. he also owned a new 66 427 HD which was a L-88 engine with cast iron heads

Would that be the BB motor that gets the special balancer listed for 66 ?....... when I ordered a balancer for my L72 there was a special BB balancer listed that was not for the L72.

Thanks for that info
Hmmmm........... Then that must be the one listed as"special"....... the one I have for my L72 is 3870325.
Interesting that they do have "replacement #s listed for parts for the unlisted HD motor for 1966........... wonder how NCRS would rationalize that but not the HD motor?

So how did TRACO get the "RACE L88 engine" (not the qualifying L88 engine) to Penske without another '66 Vette?

Here are a few 1966 L-88'S
Stories from GM engineers are they ''may'' have been 14 cars made, 9 for drag racing.
One car is located here:
http://registryofcorvetteracecars.co.../view_cars/483
Another car here:
http://registryofcorvetteracecars.co.../view_cars/442
And finally this car:
http://registryofcorvetteracecars.co.../view_cars/596
As time goes on, more examples appear. And more people show up at vintage races around the country with stories that are usually described as hearsay.....until one day a few years later a car appears that fits the story. Only idiots like me and other Race Car Corvette freaks follow the stories.
We believe there are real ''1966 L-88 ENGINE'' cars produced. Dick Guldstrand showed me his personal photos from 1966 Daytona, and one of the engine photos had the hood up......I said, ''OPPS, WHAT IS THAT ENGINE?'' Dick said a very special engine

Garrett, maybe you have a block on your computor. Trust me it is not a wild sex site. All three cars are examples of L-88 engined 1966 CORVETTES. I love the ID tag on your photo of the L-88 engine. You can access www.registryofcorvetteracecars.com and then page thru the roster to find these cars. Go to C-2 models, then last page, and go backwards page wise at the bottom for the quickest way to find each car. I was trying to help you see each car easily.
