Default HELP Carb recommendations for 327 Small Block

Need recommendations for a new carb. 64 327/250. Pretty much stock except for the cam. The carb on the car is an older Holley. No matter what I do I can't seem to get good performance. Runs to high, too low, too rich, stalls. I've decided to go ahead and get a new one. Please help. Guys - tell me what I should get.

What size holley is it? What about a rebuild?

250hp humm... is the holley to much for that engine?

I'd go with a 1406 Edelbrock, would be a good move on your engine.

Why not replace it with a new Holley of about 585 cfm? I think they make some type of street model now. No smog, electric choke. Pretty cheap.

Anything else and you'll have to change the manifold.

I agree with Dazvet. 1406 Edelbrock. I think they have a 600 c.f.m.

I put one of these on my 327 about 5-6 years ago along with an Edelbrock intake manifold. Works extremely well... This carb looks alot like the original Carter AFB that it replaced...

A '64 327/250 had a Carter WCFB, and that intake won't accept anything else; if it has a Holley on it, the intake must have been changed - what kind of intake do you have?

What did you finally do with your carb on the 327/250? I've got the same question.

IMO toss the Holley bound manifold and get one for a Carter, especially
if you like original air cleaners, or an Edelbrock if you want to use an air
cleaner with a larger opening.

I use an old Carter with a Chevy style front fuel entry on a 65 Corvette
iron manifold on my 350cid mule engine.

The fuel line is solid steel to the flexible frame line connection with an
insulation wrap where it passes behind the heater and rad hoses.
The 3/8 NAPA fuel filter is in the connection between the tank and the
frame line. The A-C idle support solenoid on the far side of the carb is
generic FLAPS and I made the bracket for it out of aluminum.

All 66 Corvettes came with Holleys but they leak too much. Edelbrocks
have ugly fuel inlet positions and won't accept old Corvette air
cleaners, but I would prefer one to a Holley.

Default Carb Recommendation

I just installed an Edelbrock 1406 on my 300HP/327, runs like a top, great gas mileage. As far as the fuel line inlet goes Edelbrock offers a offset piece that lowers the inlet line just above the base plate if front of the Carb and includes a billet inline filter, piece of cake to hook up. You can see it below.

FYI, An Edelbrock carb, or the AFB, have dual bolt patterns. The wider set of holes fit the Holley intake, and The inner set may fit the original Rochester 4V intake. A 600 cfm carb would be as big as you should go. Rich

Default Try a Holley 4160 Electric Choke Carburator...

I put one in my 1966 small block along with an Edelbrock intake manifold and it has made all the difference in the world. My car runs great and I even get 16-18 MPG on the highway!

Lot of good recommendation here. The street Avenger may be the best. Question, didn't you have the serious engine problem back in Jan. Had to pull the motor and get the engine builder involved? What's new? Dennis
