Default What is the max size for 62 exhaust before rattle problems?

What size pipe can I get away with on a 62 before I have problems with the pipes behind the tires???? I have block hugger headers with a 2 1/4 turn out pipe.

We have 2 1/2" all the way from the headers, to the behind the wheel tail pipes. We get an occasional rattle over rough roads at high speed, but nothing too annoying.

You probably already know this, but a 2.5" exhaust system all the way to the back with 2" tips, will flow like a 2" exhaust system. Also if it is not mandrel bent, a 2.5" pipe will only flow 2.25" because of the bends.

I want to do a 2.25 mandrel bent system but the owner has a bug in his nose about the 340 cars that had 2 1/2 cast manifolds etc.

I have a local guy who will do the deal for $400 with aluminized pipe, mandrel bent, and I supply the hangers and whatever muffler, something that makes a little thunder.

I think I can squeak the 2.25 over the axle and out behind the tire like stock, maybe.

Should be just fine.

Our exhaust is mandrel-bent 2 1/2" all the way back over the rear. The shop made their own hangers. The tail pipes and H pipe were added later, and not mandrel bent.

Basically, my pipes originally exited over the rear, but didn't clear the car. We had the tail pipes and H pipe added to quiet the car down prior to driving it to Bowling Green. It actually quieted down quite a bit. We have Magnaflow 2 1/2 straight through mufflers on the 62, and 3.00" large case Magnaflow mufflers on my 72 C20. I like the sound of both. The 59 Vette has 2 1/2" straight through Dynomax Ultra Flows, and the sound was pretty good, but it got louder over time.

So your pipes do not exit in the normal place a 62 does, behind the tire?? There is not much room between the body and the frame, I think that is why GM used smaller pipes out of the mufflers.

I'm not sure where the stock location was. Here is a pic of my pipes. If you need an under car view, let me know, and I'll get some tonight.

On my 56, with 2 1/2in manifolds, the pipe/mufflers are 2 1/2in from the manifolds to the tip of the tail pipe. Since 2 1/2in won't go through the 56-7 style bezels in the rear, I had my muffler guy (a genius at fabbing pipe) make up a 61-2 style system, to include the little bend and angle cut at the end of the tail pipe. I sort of fabricated my own '"factory" stock style hangers for the holes at the X member and rear frame locations. Once precisely adjusted, it almost never rattles. With 2 1/2in pipe through the holes in the X member, clearance is maybe less than 1/4in top/bottom of the pipe. The change from 2 to 2 1/2in pipe made a noticeable difference in performance!!

I have a 2 1/4" mandral bent stainless system on my '62 with Magaflow mufflers. I had to make my own hangers. Clearance is tight, especially on the rear pass side due to interference with the spare tire well. I would recommend stainless as even aluminized doesn't protect the inside from rust-out.
