OK, how do you refinish/renumber gauge faces? I have tried some of the silkscreen kits that are "developed" by high intensity light and have not had much success getting a good crisp silkscreen. Is there any other method (other than silkscreen) for refinishing these faces?

you can try something called a dry transfer, witch is different than hot stamping it is alot more durable, or you can try pad printing but you may run into the same problem devolping a good printing plate. but you can send your art work to some of the pad printing supply places and they will make you a very nice plate that is sharp.

The tach on my '57 shows twice the speed than it should. Is this something I can fix myself? I am trying to avoid sendind the unit away for six weeks!

Thanks,
Pierre

You have a tach designed to be distributor-driven (at 1/2 engine speed) that's being driven by the generator at full engine speed; you can't fix that one at home.

JohnZ, how would that problem be fixed? Is it a gear reduction or increase inside the tach? ...Mike

3 ways... you can get an inline ratio changer, or get the tach head recalibrated, or simply get a tach drive distributor. i suggest getting the tach drive distributor if you're not worried about originality (and you could get a vacuum advance distributor as a bonus... , and you don't mess up a good tach), or get the tach recalibrated.

Default tach calibration

there are two differnt tach calibations you have cable speed which runs of the generator and you have twice cable speed which runs off of the distibuter. generator drive is a one to one ratio and twice cable speed is a two to one ratio. this is a simple matter of recalibration.

My turn. I bought a new speedometer head for my '66 and it came with a plastic odometer drive gear as you can see in the photo below. Are these plastic gears reliable? I've tried to find a new steel one but it seems only the number 1 gear is available.

Default speedo gears

the second worm that runs along the bottom of the speedo head should allways be steel it will eat a plastic worm out in no time. the 3rd worm which runs up and down on the head is ok if it is plastic but steel is always going to be better. i may have one let me know.

OK, here is one for you. My original 56 tach (never out of the dash), when connected to a generator tach drive from a 58 generator shows almost 5000 rpm AT IDLE.

I figure the tach needs work.

it is most likely distibuter drive tach reading twice cable speed when it should be reading cable speed. it is very posable that the tach needs to be rebuilt. if it is jumping up that high at idle you could have alot of dibies in between the speed cup and the magnet pulling the needle up alot farther than it should. just a thought. on the back side of the tach case it should say cable speed or twice cable speed that might shed some light on the situation.
