Default blinker issues-61 vette

Trying to get all my dash working properly.....got everything done except blinkers. The bulbs are all good in the tail lights, the left blinker works fine. When you put the right blinker on, it stays solid and doesn't blink......is it a switch problem, any ideas?

Are the bulbs good in the front signal lights? Normally when the dash indicator doesn't blink but stays solid, I thought that indicated a problem with either the front or rear signal lamps.

the bulbs are good in the front also. You can turn on the headlights and all taillights work fine. When you do the right blinker, the front blinker light stays solid and the rear right tail lights don't come on at all.

if it's not the bulbs, or the flasher, or a bad wire/ground; then the only other thing it can be is the turn signal switch, and they are a notorious POS... (and relatively expensive, with no guarantee that replacing it will fix the problem.. )

Replaced my turn signal switch 3 weeks ago with CC repro and it fixed my "no right brake lights after right turn" problem...the real piece of crap was the repro turn signal cancelling ring that I bought. Wouldn't cancel the signals so sent it back, cleaned up original and reinstalled - works fine. Weird - it looked perfect but no workee.

lrsmith: Make sure you have the RIGHT flasher. When I switched to LED tail lights I put in the LED electronic flasher and nothing flashed - put original flasher back in and everything worked again. They are a little touchy it seems.

Make sure the wires down the column from the turn signal switch are connected properly and to the right terminals and they are NOT pinched somewhere. They are a little strange in that you "push" the metal lugs into the plastic connector and its easy to screw up the routing.

Finally - I see many posts from you on '61 topics...you might want to get the Dr. Rebuild '61 wiring diagrams. They are not typical schematics but once you get used to the whacky designations they are invaluable; combining pictures, color codes and routing in one place.

I think it could still be the bulb, either front or back. I believe these bulbs are double filament, meaning one for the lights and one for the brake & turn signal lights (brighter). Before you tear something else apart,I would make certain ALL the lights are good.

All of the above can be sources for poor working lights.
One of, if not THE MOST, significant source of light problems on early Vettes, especially for park and turn signal lights, is poor grounding. Even thought you think all the bulbs and sockets are well grounded, they frequently are not, or are at least marginally grounded. And, if not well grounded, this is commonly a source of poor grounding and subsequently corrosion buildup BETWEEN the base of the bulb and the inside of the socket. Check, re-check, double check and triple check the ground at each location.

it has to be the bulbs - remember they are mutil-element, and can be illuminated but do not flash - would swap the bulb that does flash for the one that doesn't and make sure that way it is NOT the bulb

Good idea - but if engages the turn signal and they come on and do not flash...he should still be using the correct brake/turn signal filament in the bulb....if he is testing with his tail lights OFF. Right ? - which is how I read the post. Turn signal switch or wiring gets my vote.

Still swapping bulbs can't hurt..

OK...changed the bulbs out, no dice. Also, the right side brake lights don't work as well as the blinker.....they did when I first got the car. Next I guess I'll check all contacts, clean the lil buggers good and make sure everything is grounded under the dash and at the lights.

You would likely be well served by starting a new thread about this topic. However, assuming you are referring to the Ammeter going to -15 and -30, that behavior would be perfectly normal for the loads you are placing on the battery, assuming the engine is not running at the time.

Hi. I just picked up on this thread and would like to ask some further questions. I am having similar problems with my turn indicators although slightly different.

I have totally rewired my 1958. Everything works except two items. One is the turn signals. The right side will work, but the left side won't. I have checked the bulbs front and rear. All good. I have replaced the turn signal switch, in fact I have tried three different ones, two new and my old one. They all do the same thing, no left hand side. In the process of doing all the checking, the left side came on once with all lights working. However, it would not work when I tried it again. It is very strange that it has worked once but never again. The brake lights and tail lights work perfectly. What I believe this testing has shown is that the bulbs are good and I am getting electricity (at least sporadically). The fuses are all good, the connection box between indicator switch wires and wire loom are good.

Any ideas on what I can try next.

The other issue is the new rebuilt fuel gauge not working, but that is probably for another thread.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brent

You need to stop posting in old threads and stick with your own thread. I answered your question in this thread and you never replied.

Thanks 65GGvert. I was told by you and others that the thread Major electrical issues was the wrong thread. So, I went to another thread that was closer to my problem; i.e., blinker issues - 61 vette, as the '61 and '58 are relatively the same. Now I realize that this is a very old thread. Maybe I'll try a third time to get the correct thread. But, thanks for your advice on both the thread and the problem. I will go back to the car today and try your recommendations.

These forums can be mystic and confusing. You have successfully found how to search for a related thread, however to get the most answers and attention to your problem, a new thread would be at the top.
On the first page of the C1/C2 forum, you will find "Forum Tools" in the header just below the page numbers. Click on that and you will find "Post a new Thread". When you post you can select C1 or C2 and put a title in with your year of car. Then proceed with the description of the problem.
65GGVert is an excellent adviser for troubleshooting your electrical issues as well as others. Following his directions to troubleshoot the system and then reporting back will soon resolve the issue.
By the way, if I missed your introduction, WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

I'm going with the poor grounding issue...sorry, that's sometimes the worst problem to locate.
