100% CORRECT. Once a flat tappet cam & lifters have been broken in correctly, you can use any oil you want. There are 100's of millions cars/trucks with flat tappet cams running no special oil without problems. I ran Castrol GTX SM rated oil in my 93 Chev. truck for over 100K miles without an issue.

Never had any significant engine problems with these cars and never used a zinc additives. I know there are other opinions out there about adding zinc but I don't use it and previous mechanics have not recommended it.

Have you read the oil article I authored and posted here? It's an easy search - thread started by me.

Newbie mistake? What I'm wondering is why 7 other members answered it.

I have to say that the use of high ZDDP oils is more critical in newer flat tappet builds than in older builds, or builds with mild cam profiles. All of the camshaft failures I have seen in the past 7-10 years have been with new cams and lifters.....no failures with old USA made stuff that is in service or NOS. The new cams and lifters are often inferior quality, and are not hardened or finished properly. Tons of issues with flat tappet engines over in the GTO forums. So, if you are running an old cam, you can probably run whatever you want. Newer cam? I would run ZDDP all the time. Better yet, I can and do run parts that were made before the 1990's in the USA.

I for one get hung up on threads not checking the dates and look at info thinking I am helping .
We I guess for one should check date and times before we comment
when 1 person jumps in others follow there should be an electronic
beep or window everything today in this electronic world has safety's.
