Just to be a smart azz: Aliens snuck in and wrote their initials in the mold.
Have not seen markings like that before, but I agree with GCD that they were done in the mold (at the factory).

Definately done in the mold. I have restored 4 corvettes and none of them had raised markings in their original muncie cases. Very odd.
I just noticed that there is a small C towards the rear of the case.

My 66 coupe has its original transmission with similar markings and I wondered the same thing as I have had several midyears and never seen that on a muncie. My car is an early car.
