64' gas tank straps hook width??
Got a set of loaner gas tank straps... AIM does not show the rear cross member hook up with the straps very well, I assume the hooked part of the strap goes into the slot of the rear cross member.
although my strap hooks are way too wide to fit into the frame slots ( double the width).... Am I missing something here??? I cannot believe they just sit under the channel and don't go through the slot....

Here's a pic with the new straps I got last year. I bought the straps from Zip or Corvette Central, I think. You can see how the strap narrows before the hook, and yes, they do go into the slot. These were quite difficult to get around the tank tight enough to put in the proper bolt. I ended up using a longer bolt, tightened them down, left it for a week so the straps would get used to being bent around the tank, then replaced the long bolts wit the proper bolts.

cool, thanks for the info......Ya I think mine are from the 70's, becasue they seem to long, there is a ton of slack...I'm going to grind down the width to fit the slot and they should work fine...if not i will buy a new set............

Mine definitely had no slack, at all. In fact I spent most of two nights trying to get the straps lined up with the shorter bolts - remove the tank, pre-bend the straps, try installing, remove the tank, bend the straps a little differently, etc. - about 5 times before I decided to go with the longer bolt to help shape the straps. I will say this... the tank is not going to budge or nudge!
As far as grinding the end of your straps - my straps are actually folded at the ends for the hooks. This adds a fair amount of strength to the hook. I am sure they do it with a press, so I'm not sure how/if you could do that.
If I remember correctly, the straps were about $25.
