Default Water Temp Gauge Voltage

Just bought a new ACDelco temp gauge at Bloominton Gold for my 64' Vert. Came with multiple warnings of improper wiring will blow gauge !!
Don't want to do that. What range of voltage shound I have at the temp gauge terminals ?? Does it go from 0 to 12 ? Is there a resistor in the gauge. I'm using a new Wells TU-5 sending unit. Does the guage need a reference ground, and the two terminals vary the potential ? Diagrams show positive volts go to gauge and negative side goes to sending unit. Sounds simple
Thanks ahead of time. Don't want to smoke the new guage.

Yes it's as simple as that. Getting perfect calibration may be another matter.

Thanks for the reply Mike,
In my checking, when I take a test meter from the positive post on the
battery, to the temperature sender center post ,I get full battery voltage. Yet the ohm reading on the sender (body to tip) reads around 450 ohms @ 85 degrees. Which is within specs.
Does that sound right ?? I would assume the lower voltage would give you a lower reading. HELP

Read through this. I hope it helps with what you might face with your Wells temp sensor and gauge calibration.
