Default All Around Differential Gears

If I was to replace my differential and not knowing what I had what would be good for in town and highway driving setup? Has anyone bought from Duntov Motor Company in Farmers Branch, Texas.

I have 3:70's in my car and I turn approximately 2700 rpm at 60. If I was to pick out an all around gear ratio I would look at the 3:55's. What is the advantage of the wide ratio over the close ratio on the 3:36? My car came with a wide ratio also. I replaced it with the close ratio. I figured I wasn't doing any racing anyway and the final is 1:1 in each tranny so it didn't matter once I got to 4th gear.

much better pick up with a wide box with a highway gear combo...a wide box is geared lower (higher numerically) for the first 3 gears....4th is i-i.......sounds like your tach may be off or are you running different size tires??.......i would think with your set up you are closer to 2900 at 60 ......oh well!!

I have bought parts from Duntov as well...Top Notch Company, excellent quality and great customer service!!
I have my original 4:11 in my 435 BB (Never has been touched!) - You must have gas card when you run this rear end ratio

How much in town driving? How much highway? If on the highway, how far?

For 90% in town driving I would go with 3.73 or 4.11's. For 50/50 I would go with 3:55. For mostly touring and all day cruising events 3.36 or 3.08's

I have two diffs. One with 3.36 and the other with 4.11's The car is a completely different animal depending on which gear set is installed.

I have the 3.36 gears in now, as I did a long (2500 mile) trip last summer, and plan another one this summer. For around town, short hops, or a 3-4 hour tip the 4.11's are great.

4.11's 3500 RPM = 70 MPH.

I've dealt with Duntov a few times, no problems, good customer service, just give them a call, tell them your driving style. I'm sure they can provide the proper set up....tm

Tires are a little bigger but not all that much. Tach is OK. That was why I asked. Mine definitely runs at about 2700 on the tach. Oh well, I'll live with it.

I finally settled on 3:50 gears for my '62 (it has a 9" Ford rear) with a 2.52 lst Muncie. The engine is modified and has over 400 hp, so there is plenty of torque to get it moving quickly. You don't say what engine you have, but if it is a low HP I wouldn't go much below 3:55 as it might be too sluggish at low speed

Actually the 250 HP engine makes as much torque as the 365SHP engine and does so at a lot less RPM. I would rather have the 3.36 or 3.08's with the 250.

I've never wanted to change my 3:36s. Fifteen mpg city and highway, car doesn't seem to know the difference!

Don't forget your tire size. I have a 3.55 and when I had 70 series I swear it pulled out better in 3rd but when I went to 60 series it dropped it to around a 3.70 which I like. I'm not much for above 55mph anyway. I ain't no hurry when I'm out cruising but I like getting to 55mph quick

I changed my stock 3.08's to 3.55's when I did my engine swap and driveline rebuild. With the zz383 in it now these gears pull quite nicely with the wide ratio Muncie. I can run it down the highway at 70mph and it is a terror from stop light to stop light. A real nice combo. I got the drive shaft and half shafts rebuilt, bead blasted, balanced and painted. Trailing arms rebuilt and powder coated and the 3.55 gear set all from Bairs in Linesville Pa.
