Default 1954 carb rebuild

Hi, I would like to rebuild all 3 side draft carbs on my 54. I can order the kit through the major parts guys but they all state not for use with ethanol or methanol. Since this is the only gas available what will happen if i use these kits? What are my other options? Thanks again, Mike

For the percentage used in fuel stations I can't imagine a problem. My dad complains that his fuel pump rubbers fall apart in his old chevy due to the bad gas but I've not had an issue with either of my vettes.

I've not heard of any problems with todays mixtures causing problems with the 54 carbs. As a side note there are 3 different rebuild kits for these carbs that I have identified, and they all fit. The first one for the specific application I have had a lot of trouble with leaking. The second one being the turbo corvair kit, which again fits, I found much better but again leaked. I have been happiest with a kit NAPA sells for these cars which have a spring/needle/rubber seat combination. This was the kit that finally fixed my leaking problem. PM me if you would like the part # and I'll look it up for you.

Thanks Greg, I tried my local NAPA dealer and the ones their books said would work, were for a updraft carb. I will give them this # tomorrow and see if they can order it. Thanks, Mike

If not just order them online. I just placed an order a few weeks ago and received the kits last week.

Greg, How did you come up with this 2-5872. I looked it up and it looks correct but does not say what it is for on the NAPA website. I went through the NAPA website and searched for 1954 corvette and they came up with the same number the local store gave me which is not correct. Thanks again and I will try to pick up the 2-5872 kits tomorrow. I have a friend who works there and can usually get it in a few days. Mike

MKH-I got that number originally from a corvette mechanic about 5 years ago. I have used that kit to rebuild my carbs twice in the last 5 years. Hope this data helps.

Greg, I spoke with my NAPA dealer and got a phone # for echlin assistance and they stated the carb kit fits, 62-66 Corvair, 52-56 Nash, and 53-55 Chevrolet. Thanks for all the information. I hope to fire the Blue Flame Six up soon. Mike

DIgging up this old post.
I just searched Napaonline and the above carb number still works.
Though a revised number is CRB 25872
The price was a bit of a shocker though $83. for one carb WOW!!

The issue I had was leaking needle and seats on my '54. Greg's solution is what cured it for me. The last thing I wanted to do was collect from my insurance company after the fire.
