Default How to check if temp sender is working?

After a 10 mile highway cruise on a 93 degree afternoon, the temp read 180 but seemed like it was pretty hot (maybe rightfully so). However, the gauge also seems to just always be stuck on 180. It doesn't begin any lower... so how can I check to see if it is not operating correctly.

Pull the wire off the temp sender and measure the Ohms of resistance between the terminal on the sender, and ground. The Ohms should go down as the engine warms up.

Take a look at this excellent PDF

Quick check to verify gauge operation - with the key on, remove the connector from the sending unit (infinite resistance), and the gauge should peg to full cold. Then ground the connector terminal to the engine (zero resistance), and the gauge should peg to full hot. If the gauge doesn't respond in that manner, you either have a gauge issue or an issue with the green wire between the gauge and the sending unit. If the gauge never moves at all, make sure it's getting 12V from the pink wire.

In reading the article, your choices are basically to keep looking for an original GM sender or live with the inaccuracy if you put inline resistors?

I bought one at O'Reilly's that matches the heat gun exactly. BWD lifetime warranty I believe.

Assume you got the AC Delco one(#G1852) or did you get BWD one (#WT203 )?
