1961 heads 37745692 vs. 3782462 end apperance
I have been running 462 heads on my 61 for 40+ years. After years of resistance I am putting aluminum after market heads on it. If I make some stealth cosmetic changes to the news ones, they should look like 692 (270hp heads).
is there any difference in the external appearance 692 vs. 462 heads, do the 692 heads have the 'double humps' Will the cross-engine mounting plate hide the differences.
thanks all
Joe

There ARE NOT any aftermarket heads that look like, nor can be made to look like pre-69 heads on the ends!
The reason is because 69-later and ALL aftermarket heads are machined AND have holes for mounting accessory brackets (alternator, AC comp, etc).
For the 400 that is in my 56, I did cheat a little. I used 1966 462 heads with the double humps, ground off the humps and then shaped a pyramid symbol on the ends of the heads. Then I had them moderately worked, opened them up for 2.02/1.6 valves and had additional bosses welded, drilled and tapped for staggered bolt pattern valve covers.

Tom and Gary,
thanks for your comments. I understand better now. I am not going crazy about the stealth look, but wanted to investigate and get some ideas.
I like the 462 heads, but as part of project going to use DART 200 cc alum on a bigger bore small block. Not trying to hide the DART heads (except with paint), but wanted to look near original to the untrained eye.
You two have highly trained eyes.
thanks
