4 speed recommended
I am 84 and have my 4 speed since Nov 62. As long as your ol man can stand up and move his legs, tell him I said to go for the 4 speed and "man it" Regards, and good luck to him (and me) Abe G

61 power glide neutral safety relay
I have a 61 that was a power glide car and I was researching what appeared to be a horn relay screwed to the firewall overtop the starter motor, because I had no idea what it was and there is only 1 wire attached to it. I'm guessing it's the neutral safety switch that was left on when the transmission was switched. It appears to have 2 tabs for wires. Is this thing worth anything? I saw on this forum that people were trying to find them.

Neutral Safety Switch
What you have is not a neutral safety switch. That is mounted on the transmission and connected to the shifter linkage. There was a starter relay on the firewall. I will look up that part number when I get home later. The 1961 NSS was a "one-off" and they can be hard to find.

Starter Relay
Just to close out the NSS topic, that part number is 1993520 and it is unique to 1961. It has a "U" shaped bracket and a bell crank. One wire only......and it is a bit#* to install. Photo attached.

Safety Car
There is a guy identified in this thread, John Pirkle, who is said to rebuild them. I have seen re-build vendors at shows as well so it may be worth something even if it does not work.

'61 nss
Sorry, but no. Pictured NSS came off a 1-owner 1961 with 34K original miles, matching numbers etc. It was last registered in 1965. It has a cast iron PG.
I put a NOS part on the car to replace it. Part # 1993520 is printed on the box and matches the part number and illustration in the 1961 assembly manual. Pictured item is definitely a 1961 NSS for a cast iron PG. Pretty darn sure it was unique to 1961 but I can verify that when I get home and look at manuals.

1961 nss
No problem....it just happens to be the one thing I had to spend some time researching to get the beast to run I think they made the transmission tunnel narrower in 1961 to accommodate wider seats so they had to change the NSS. It is very difficult to replace with the transmission installed.
BTW, I like your hood ornament
