Rapids Chevrolet - '67 Silver Pearl Roadster L68
Dan Hampton, I have to ask if there is any chance you would have know my car in Cedar Rapids. Per tank sticker - Rapids Chevrolet was the selling dealer. Build date of Oct 24, 1966 Silver Pearl Roadster, black vinyl seats/interior, black convertible top, no hardtop then, 427 400HP, 4 Speed Close Ratio... and that's about it. I bought it from I believe the 3rd owner in Des Moines in 1974. I have only the tank sticker for documentation. I inquired about any sales docs with current Cedar Rapids Chevrolet dealer - no such luck. Wish I would have done my homework back in the 70's! Thanks.

Sorry, I don't. Rapids Chevrolet became McGrath some years ago. The original location of Rapids Chev was on 1st Avenue. I spent a lot of my teenagehood hanging out at their parts counter. Any idea of being able to trace the owner via the previous owner(s)? Given that time period, I should really know the car but it might have been sold by Rapids to a person who did not live or cruise the streets of C.R. In eastern Iowa it was a large city and the owner could have been from within a 40 mile radius. I knew most of the BowTie iron back then if it was a local car.

Dan, thanks for the quick answer. I just had to ask seeing the timing of your days in Cedar Rapids. Did Stout bring you to Menomonee? Do you get over to RA? We'll be looking after the Corvette Corral for 4 events this year, including Nascar. Thanks again.

Another Pic
One more for the road. April of '66. '58 with what turned out to be a bad rebuild on the motor. The fools knurlized the pistons because they couldn't afford to bore it out. Taper must have been .012+. Tranny had a bad cluster. Eventually, I got a GM warranty motor that had a bad piston (300 miles), honed it out, installed a L79 cam, swapped the tranny out with another three speed (this was over the course of a year). Never like this car nearly as much as the '57 pictured earlier. Paid $1,250 for it. Could have had a pristine '62/one owner that belonged to a guy that worked for my Dad. He wanted $2,000 but that was like a million bucks back then. I would have had ten times the car for another $750 but it was not meant to be. I sold this in May of '67 for $1,000 and bought the '57 two months later. This is one I would not want back. I think that is all the pics that I have. Thanks, guys, for indulging me on this trip down Corvette lane.

Damn....any kid that young who had, or could borrow, or even find a Corvette to lean on for a picture, was in 'elite', rich kid status in my neck of the woods.
It was Corvairs and Impalas for the rest of us mere mortals...

A little enhancement.
I have a bunch of old (60s) pictures our groups corvettes, if any one wants to see some. I scanned my friends vette photo album for him and kept a copy. Funny thing is, I never took any pictures back then for myself.

I put down $750.00 (lawn mowing money) and borrowed $500.00 from Dad and paid it off the day of high school graduation (14 months later) working in a DX station on nights and weekends. The money would have been better served by investing with Buffett but, then again, I wouldn't be swapping war stories on the Forum with you guys if that had taken place. Some memories are priceless, I guess.

Those prices paid are priceless, and I wish for those days again, but really, we have them.
Those days, you could buy old Corvettes for the equivalent of 10 to 20 weeks pay.
Today, you can buy C4s for the equivalent of 5 to 10 weeks pay easily, unless you are making minimum wage.
The killer is the insurance. Back then, you could just skip it if you didn't have the money. Today, you can't and they nail you even harder for that.

Those are some cool pictures and good stories Dan. Don't feel to bad about the shorts, I bet we all have a few of those kind of pictures with our cars that we don't have the ba$&s to post.

Great pics & great memories. Here's a pic of my '63 340 hp back in 1967 that I bought that summer just after returning from Vietnam. My sister in the picture, she was livin' large at high school when I let her drive it to school. I'm from a small rural community, and it's the first Corvette I ever remember in this part of the country.
