Default Sidepipe cover insulation, do ya really need it?

I just reinstalled my OEM side pipes with new front pipes. The "Driver" quality, or maybe "Rat Rod" quality, cover insulation has seen better days. Is anyone running without the FG insulation? There should be enough space for them to stay cool. Thanks

That's a very good ?. No doubt the shield will get a bit warmer, should be no factor.
What might be, is more heat in the cockpit. Sorry I don't have a definitive answer. Bill

Before I switched to sidemounts, I ran sipepipes for years without the insulators - no problem.

The covers didn't get all that hot.

I removed my Insulators 10 years ago when I put in 3.5 inch glass packs. My wife and I have driven thousands of miles like that with no problem and I have grandkids with me all the time with no problem. They do get a little hotter but have never burned anyone

My 67 never had them on it, but only got a little warm not that bad. But for sure more than the 65 I have now with them on the car. YOU WILL BE FINE HERE MAN...

If you are using carbon steel (plain or aluminized) or the 'straight chrome' magnetic stainless pipes, they exhibit 3-4X higher thermal conductivity than the non-magnetic (usually type 304) stainless products. Thus, they 'sink off' the exhaust heat pretty well and should cause you little or no difficulty. If, on the other hand, you have side exhaust in the non-magnetic grades, the pipes themselves retain the exhaust gas heat much longer. It's probably not a big deal or hazard -- just wouldn't expect the aluminum shield to be as cool to touch as soon after a run.

Another side benifit, I feel that by letting the heat out of the openings in the covers stops a lot of heat soak to the frame and bidcage resulting in cooler cabin temp on long runs

Thanks for the replies, I'm going for it! They are OEM pipes so I assume plain carbon steel.
