Default opinions abut a 55 engine

I don't know if any 55 owners of a Corvette or Car are on this forum but trying to get a consensus on exshaust manifolds as to which one is used on early or late models . So few 55 Corvettes are left that I get little to no comments on NCRS forum. I'm helping put the JM to gather for 55 so I thought I would try asking here. NCRS members don't seem to wont to commit their opinions or there are so few 55 Corvettes out there. This is the less known year Corvette next to the early 56 NCRS JM talks about. People here seem to express their thought more easily. Weather you know or not what is your thinking. Thanks ROY

Default 1955 #008

#008 has the smooth manifolds, like the large picture. Original engine car.

I have a customer with 8 55s! I can give him a call tomorrow and see if he has time to survey his cars and compare VINs to the manifolds. Does this only pertain to left hand (drivers side) manifolds?

How quick is the Judging Manual going to come together? I should be inspecting a 67 for someone in about a week, and it's not located to far from this Corvette collection. I could stop by and inspect them myself, something I always enjoy doing.

Are there other things that need verification for the manual. He also has 7 53s and 2 54s. If you want to PM me, I will give you my phone and fax numbers and you could give me a list of things you want looked at. I could also pass on his number to you. I'd want to clear it with him first, but from past experience, I don't think this would be a problem.

Here's a look at a portion of the collection. I'm not to sure about that copper one in the foreground though, it can't be an original color, can it?

Roy,
Do you suppose that the lower photo (manifold with notch) is MAYBE, MAYBE, for a pass car with pwr stng, and was carried over to the 55 Vettes???

Tom! Always nice to have you chime in , I read many of your postings . No I think it was a running change to straitens that area . I'm realizing the top pic. Design was a early design . For 55 Corvette up to a (E) date it's used // then around the E date it changed to the bottom pic. Design. My 55 #401 date (F) has the de-tent or ridge . This is something I began to noticed by a friend that pointed it out to me. So I'm looking into it!

Roy, does your later 55 have these verticle slots in the lower area of the radiator baffle panels? I'm told that #006 does have them. The car I have here is #008.

No I've never seen them before . On your Radiator shroud lower area did you have a two piece some what triangle support screwed to the lower shroud holes.
If you e-mail me at 55copper@oro.net we can send pic's back to each other for items and detail.

Roy, Alan Colvin's "Corvette by the Numbers" book has a photo on page 261 that shows two 3704791 exhaust manifolds (one Flint-cast, and one Tonawanda-cast), and the Flint-cast manifold has the depressed groove you show in the bottom photo; the Tonawanda-cast 791 manifold does not, and looks like the one in your top photo.

A Flint engine should have the one with the groove, whether it's in a Corvette or a car. The one without the groove was only used on Tonawanda engines, and Tonawanda engines were never used in Corvettes.
