Default BEST source for wiper motor repair/rebuild

For as long as I've had the 56 (since 73), the wipers work great----------for a few cycles-----------then just quit. I turn off the wiper switch and eventually they come back on and then park. Sooooooooo, for those few times I have needed wipers, I turn them on, they make 2 cycles, I turn them off and wait a while before turning them on again for 2 cycles.
Well, when driving to the SACC Natls in Bowling Green, IT RAINED ALL THE WAY, FOR 800mi!!! And 2 ocassional cycles of the wipers just didn't cut it!
So, after all these years, I guess I need to break down and send it somewhere for a fix of the problem.
Who/where is the best source for wiper motor repairs???

Hi Tom,
Steve Hackel did both my headlight and wiper motors. Top notch work and attention to detail and great turn around time. He does work for several of the vendors as well.

Brian gets my vote! Great work and a choice of a basic rebuild, rebuild with freshening up of the appearence, or a rebuild with an NCRS correct replating and refinishing of the entire motor.

Tom,
I'm going by memory because it's been several years, but, I think the wiper moter control is a pretty simple deal. It seams to me like something you might take a look at before you send it to anybody.

Larry,
As I understand, unfortunately, the problem with my "intermitant" wipers is related to something INSIDE the housing where the contact points are. I've heard comments about somehow the contact points are burned or something like that and need to be replaced because they don't make good contact when they get hot. Since I'm not much of an electrical guru----------------ESPECIALLY with wipers, I'll have to defer that repair to an expert.

Its really simple inside Tom....A quick buff up and repositioning of the points often resolves issues. My wipers would "pulse" about every 10 seconds sometimes. They would move up a couple of inches and then park again while driving around....annoying and embarrassing. I opened the motor up unsoldered the point assembly and took some emery cloth to the points and adjusted their position with some tweezers and everything is sweet again. I know some of your aircraft restoration buddies could do this in their sleep. Then if things are still messed up you can ship it off.

ALSO, while we're on the subject of malfunctioning wipers, it SEEMS to me that at one time MANY years ago, I remember that it was said that this problem could be permanently cured by modifying the internal contacts so that the wipers were either Off or On full time on only ONE speed. Thus, when turned on, they STAYED on until turned off again.
Anyone know anything about this???

Tom
you might want to consider one of the wiper conversion kits and just get rid of that cable crap...

Corvette Central sells the kit to eliminate the cables system. It replaces the motor and cables with a new motor and lever system. If I remember right, the motor mounts under the dash, not on the firewall. I think they developed the set up for their Project 57 car. The cost is around $500-$550.

if it's the push-pull cable system (which is what i bought from CC several years ago), it can be purchased directly from the manufacturer (name escapes me at the moment... senior moment... ) for about 2/3 of the CC price)

Abe,
I called Steve. I was pleased with his response to my wiper problem, so I'll pull it off and send it to him.

THANKS

You know you can rebuild these yourself, don't you?.

the instructions are in the ST-12. Anybody that paints their lifter valley probably is capable of rebuilding a wiper motor.

Here is the CC kit:
http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000050e~Z5 Z5Z5ABWGN~P523.95~~~~S2ZL0T0ICW208118245 06a~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000050x
and here are the installation instructions:

Pretty straightforward but not cheap by any means...

Rain Gear is another (cheaper) option:
