Default rear main seal is seeping oil

anyone else having problems with the rear main seal dripping oil?

its not a lot of oil but after the motor gets hot and i return her to the garage she drips oil? just replaced the rear main seal in a complete
motor rebuild? dont know why it would be leaking oil? but it always
seems to have oil at the bottom of the bell housing.

my friend says they all leak a little from the rear main seal because of the crank shaft wearing a groove in the end and causing it to leak
oil? does this make sense? does everyone have leaks? it is not a
lot of oil but a little puddle under the car that is enough to be really
annoying for me?? thanks

One piece seal or 2 piece?
One piece pan gasket?

My 2 piece one does not leak if that helps.
Are you sure its not the pan seal?

FWIW, when the rear main bearing cap is installed (during a rebuild) you are supposed to add sealer between the cap and block.

This may or may not be the cause....but possible

Rear seal leaks are a PITA!! We have always used the the red Viton rubber seals and we do use silicon on the outter edges of the seal set them in place and roll it in with my finger.

Now I have seen guys offset the seal and when setting the rear cap on it will peel the back of the seal and that always causes a leak!!

Just because there is oil at the bottom of the bell housing doesn't mean that it is the rear main seal. Oil could be running down from somewhere else or getting blown back.

Mine was the oil pressure line fitting

good advice. remove starter, oil filter and then the sheet metal cover to expose the back of the flywheel. If the flywheel is not wet with oil, its not likely the rear main seal...

Also check the back of the intake. Sometimes it doesn't get sealed properly and will leak down the back of the motor and rear of the oil pan. Also valve covers at rear area since the motor points slightly down in the rear.
