61 Vette
I had the exact same problem on my 61. New generator (2043), new regulator, new battery.
The gauge read a little to the negative side when driving. Initial start up it read a little to the positive side and immediately dropped to a hair under negative. The car ran for a long time that way, until I stopped disconnecting the battery (utilizing a negative cutoff switch). When I let the car sit for a week or so my battery would fail.
I finally figured it out; somewhere in the wiring it was draining my battery enough so when I did go on a short trip it couldn't charge the battery back up to crank when stopped.
I started to use the cut off switch again and everything is fine.
However, I am going to re-wire the car, since the wire is so old and will eventually create a worse problem.
I would not worry to much about the indicator needle reading a little to the negative. Thats my two cents.
