Default Carpet is out, need advice on cleaning floor pan

Doing insulation on the floor and need some advice. I have the carpet out and have been scrapping the floors with a putty knife to remove as much old glue and cr_p as possible. It appears the old motor that leaked has oil stained part of the tunnel area. What can I use to clean the dirt, old glue, and oil stains so the new insulation with stick using 3M upholstery and carpet glue. Thanks

I went through the same thing and the putty knife was the best thing I found...I had some sort of stains...can't say if it was oil but my 'sticky' foil insulation stuck down fine. I'm not sure what you could use to 'leech' out any old matter from the floorboards...kitty litter maybe ?? Sawdust ?? I wouldn't worry about it too much.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover works really well.

Use it with lots of ventilation.
That stuff really messes up my stomach.
YMMV.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner. Comes either in a quart can or spray aerosol. It got the floor cleaned up nice so the Dynamat I put down stuck great.

Ken,you may want to use KILZ primer in a can. It's designed to be a barrier on oil soaked surfaces. Works like a charm on this application. Be sure and let it cure for a few days before applying glue.

Default This works really well

Krud Kutter adhesive remover. A little hard to find, though.

Almost as good -- citrus-based grafitti remover. Give it time to work and the crud almost jumps out of the car by itself.

Yep that stuff works great.. The aerosol cans are a little pricey but the cans of it are not so bad..

Goof off smells to be very similar to the 3M Adhesive Remover and is cheaper. Leave a little of the jute when you pull the carpet. This will act as a sponge to hold the Goof Off on the glue and allow more penetration. Use a plastic scaper and nylon bristle stiff scrub brush to take the glue off after it softens.

Make sure you have plenty of ventilation. I recommend a fan to blow fresh air through the body. Even then you will be exposed to vapors.

Previous owner had painted the floors in my 65 coupe, then glued down some cheap carpet, left a big mess. I stripped it all off the same way I did the outside, paint stripped, scotch brite pads and laquer thinner. Just get a good fan and wear a breathing mask when leaning into the back area... or suffer the headache that follows... But actually, using the same techniques to strip exterior paint it went pretty quick and easy. Pull the drain plugs and put some plastic underneath.
