I'm working on a 65 396 but unfortunately, it has a 67 Chevelle 396. The rest of it seems to be there, I hope!

Nope, except that the VIN must be higher than 12500.

Default The 65 BB ID List

There are other ways to tell.

The hood:

...another giveaway is the fuel line, which can only be properly replaced by lifting the body. The front makes a 90 degree turn toward the fuel pump where the small block is more of a 45 degree angle.

When I purchased the car, I had a very knowledgable guy come over and take a look. He pointed out the obvious BB traits such as the rear end, rear sway, front sway diameter, brake booster, but he was very keen to look at the throttle lever since the small block would work if one converted a car to a big block but most people forget to change this.

SAS

The List
- 65 BB hood has a "stinger"
- 65 BB Battery is not on passenger's side (see above)
- BB's had steel caps with bolts on the diff yokes (see above)
- Fuel Line (see above)
- Throttle Linkage (See above)
- Oil Gauge: 0-80 psi
- Tach: 6500 redline
- Heavier sway bars (but I am not sure on std BB cars); on the F40 suspension for the BB, if so equipped, has 7 leaf rear spring with sway bars 9/16" rear and 15/16" front.
- 396 Block casting number is 3855962
- Bell Housing 3858403
- VIN must be higher than 12500
- 396 Fender badges

Hope this helps.
