Burning Brakes
Well my Mongoose GS is home again. Has a much different look than before with charcoal spokes on the wheels instead of yellow and silver pipes instead of yellow. Still has the Penske/Sunoco look but a bit less in your face ! I think I like this color combo better than the yellow. With photo bucket gone I have to figure out how to post pictures again !! ----- Ken

Just a follow-up on a series of posts I started over a year ago about my attempt to copy the '64 Sebring #004 exhaust down to the hanger/clamps detail.

Larry,
You might want to re-think that piece of metal welded perpendicularly to the exhaust pipe. I had something like that on my GS early on and the weld suffered a fatigue failure.
I believe the failure was caused by both engine vibration and the growth/shrinkage of the pipe length as it heated and cooled. Can't prove either one, just my theory.
On the final incarnation of the exhaust system, there is a (totally incorrect) slip mounting of the pipe at the point of the turn-out. Works fine and has never failed.
I'll email a picture to you.

Jim and I spoke recently about weight. This is my chassis complete with fluids (except coolant) half tank of gas, transverse spring in the back and spare tire hanging out the back.

Nicely done, Larry. If I didn't know better, I'd believe I was looking at the original #004.

Gotta hand it to you Larry .......I'm with Jim on this one.
Little do folks realise that your recreation is in fact, a lot more accurate in it's period correct detailing than the REVS restored #4!
You have every reason to be mighty proud.
I guess you'll have change your profile picture soon!!!

If anyone is interested in details, research shows the copper strips were installed after the CB bracket was, so they don't cross at the centerline or go under bracket.
And with the help of (Martin DIY magic) the dated/GM stickered extinguisher has a proper GM inspection tag

Larry,
Since the metal tape doesn't cross under the antenna mount, how does the mount electrically connect to the tape?

Larry,
If your CB installation will ever be operational, you'll need to run a wire from that screw thru the tape over to one of the retaining bolts for the antenna bracket. Antennae need a ground reference, and altho the metal tape isn't a great one, it's what you have with a fiberglass body, hence the need to make the connection.

Thanks for the thanks and Jim, there are a couple oddities that "I'll" never make them work and the CB is one of them.
Only thing notable in this image is the correct font of the #3 on the glass, the no-lift wiper blades and fuse block sitting where the heater usually sits.
